The icons can be replaced by using a different skin. Some skins use their own unique icons which are stored in the skin bitmap file.
If you wanted to do this on your own choice of skin then you'd have to modify the skin.

Version 8 is no different only that there is another file now you need to edit and include on your skin.

Near the bottom of the page there's a link on the current sysicons file that you can download, edit and then include on your skin.
