You can try it in TellyMedia. It handles up to 7.1. It looks at your speaker configuration and reduces down to the number of speakers you have if necessary. You would just have to try and see what kind of results you get. Mostly I convert the surround to stereo but it will let the surround pass thru if it can. It should work for 3.1. Not ideal but would be interested in your results if decide to try it.
