Topic: Why Are VirtualDJ Waveforms So Dull Compared to Other Software?
Hi everyone,

I’ve been using VirtualDJ for a while now, and one thing that constantly bothers me is how dull the waveforms look compared to other DJ software. The waveform colours in other platforms are sharp, vibrant, and far more appealing to use. They’re also much clearer to view, especially during a performance when quick visual cues are essential.

I’ve noticed that some skins attempt to address this issue, but no matter which one I try, the waveforms always seem lacklustre and underwhelming. It’s frustrating because VirtualDJ excels in so many areas, but the visual aspect of waveforms feels neglected in comparison to its competitors.

Does anyone else feel the same way? Are there any plans or workarounds to improve this? I’d love to hear your thoughts or suggestions.

Thanks!

Attached is a comparison of Lexicon waveforms next to VDJ... needless to mention which one is which!!!

That depends on your skin and wave form settings, I'd say

These examples are all options in the VDJ default skin in pro layout, and just for the main waveform:

You kind of proved his point lol!

None of those look "Crisp" or "sharp" except this one,

Not saying they're not useable because they totally are but just never have looked as good as the other software. And maybe it's because of being uploaded, maybe that's making them look worse than what they are in this thread.

For me its doesn't affect anything I do but I can see his point...

I don't agree at all - I think some of the VDJ ones look better :)
- and they certainly bring you more info and is more useful

VDJ's waveforms look like wavefoms. The others look like arrows. A waveform is fuzzy, due to the complexity of the sound. I assume the other software waveforms are abstract to only show the info needed for beat matching and energy in the track. VDJ's waveforms are more true representations of the sound.

You are most definitely entitled to your opinion. But Like I said it doesn't bother me at all, Ill mix with or without waves.

I agree VDJ waveforms are not the best around.

How waveforms "look" is a subjective thing (as you can see from the responses here). IMO it would be more helpful to point out the difficiencies of the waveform that could actually help with mixing. For example, Serato's Beatmatching Display would be a helpful addition to the waveform display.
