March of the Idiots Part 2

ready for this?

apparently after i "refused to help her in anyway." she decided to come in tonight and she went and complained to the manager and to the owner. after they talked to her for 10 minutes, they ended up barring her, her boyfriend, and 3 of her friends.

"we'll take out business elsewhere. we spent at least $20.00 a night in here....blah blah blah. this place sucks. the music sucks. your people are so rude to us." the usual BS.

i could feel the love. but when i told them -management- that they dont get to come in anymore or i walk... no brainer for them.

argh, that was pretty harsh. have had some similar experiences. i had a group of young people come in (20 of them) who ordered 1 coke and a bottle of water) and were dancing and hollering for a few hours. (Its a lounge btw, so the chairs and sofas and dim lighting should give you an idea).

They kept bugging me for more up music. Okay, it was the last hour so I obliged them. The manager likes my harder stuff too so it was cool.

Then one of them started harassing me for Shakira and 50 cent (did I mention its deep house, turning to more funky stuff, nevertheless, house)...

Then he had the gaul to say 'why do you play this crap? you should play indian music' (I live in Dubai and we have about 60% indians in this country, so they are the majority even to locals which are only 12%).

I told him that I'm doing something different and this is a lounge. He went away and came back later with the manager to complain to him in front of me that I should 'play indian music because we (he and his friends) are the majority and he (me) needs to do something different).

The manager took one look at him and said get out and when you know how to behave and order drinks, come back or we'll charge you cover.

I had one confused couple come up to me and give a look of disdain and say 'wow, im surprised they make those things anymore' (pointing at my vinyl).

Its a thankless job we do, but we do it cuz we love music. That should be enough. I propose we also create a forum where we can put the 1% of praises we get in our thankless job.

I;'ve had some old people asking me in great detail what music i was playing it cuz they loved it (it was trip hop off the ninja tune label) and they wanted to know where to buy it.

Moments like that make me proud because i can play pop hits like any idiot, but instead im here to show people something new. 90% of the time it's a battle. 9% of the time, people show thier appreciation. 1% of the time, I have made a sincere difference in someones musical knowledge and outlook... That makes it worthwhile for the other 99% of the time.....

The movie "groove" sums it up perfectly....

In the movie the Rave organiser, Ernie, says "I do it for the nod. When some guy comes up to me saying 'Thank you for making this happen, I really needed this' and then they nod...and I nod back".

Though Ernie didn't actually DJ I think its similar enough. If just one person comes up and says what a fantastic night they had then your on a mental high all that week.

i used to feel like that, but now its more along the lines of a full dance floor, which with country music is really not as easy as it seems. i can throw people out on the dance floor easily enough, just by playing some hip-hop. but when i can keep a dance floor flowing nice and smoothly with a caountry set thats not all slow songs.. thats like crack for a dj.

which is why i have had to listen to "Why don't you play more hip-hop/dance/rap? it puts more people on the floor." and have heard that question so much it doesnt even bother me anymore.

the one thing that's been getting me the most lately? Soulja boy. you know its bad when 60+ year old granny's are coming up and asking for you to play that gawdawful peice of crap.

mid 50's/early 60's lady and her husband come to the DJ booth and request... Storkin' - Clarence Carter

I ask them If they are sure.... They Reply ....."Yes Dear, The Song about F**king"

I giggled and played the song.

HAha, thats a funny story. As a wedding DJ ur obliged to play requests, thats what they want. Also why I dont play weddings. But def. a fun experience :)

I hear ya country... I play format styles, Deep House, Chicago House, Jazz, Acid Jazz, Dub, Ska and Reggae. I get retarded requests like 'what do you have?'... err, well, what im playing? I've gotten used to it cuz now i expect most people only to want what theyve already heard 10 million times on the radio.

'Innocent until proven guilty', my ass... When it comes to music for me it's 'Idiot until proven intellectual'. But then again Im a music snob and i couldnt really care less what radio lovers want. I get hired for special venues and format parties, so im different than the standard dj. I dont play house parties often or birthdays, corporate events, weddings, etc. Music is more than background noise for me so 90% of jobs I refuse. No offense to pop people, its your choice. If you come to one of my parties and start abusing me for not playing your tastes, i will happily show you where to shove it.

But from a professionalism point of view, i represent a small portion of what a DJ really is. Respect to those that are happy to play requests all night long, i certainly couldnt. I find it insulting to set-craftsmanship.

house/techno/electronic/ect. died a slow horrible death in this area. about 6 years ago people around here just got tired of it and the 2 dance clubs that were playing it ended up switching format to hip-hop/top 40 dance. and i still get people from out of town asking if i have any and the sad fact is that other than what i play with at home to clear my head of redneck hillbilly in-bred illiterate white trash music, i just couldnt without killing my club.

am i a whore for that?... maybe, but with the money they're throwing at me, i can bend over and take it a bit longer.

they can have their george strait and whatnot. i can always go home and listen to this http://www.esnips.com/doc/5cd65683-8473-42cb-bf36-1890556ba3ca/things-to-do-at-4-am or virtual dj radio.

and now back to our regularly scheduled thread...

i ran into this one while out paying bills of all things... NOT EVEN AT WORK!

"We're gonna be out there this weekend, and want you to play our song, 'cause you didnt play it last time we were out there."

i have no idea who they were, but apparently they know me and think i know what there song is, and also think i'm gonna remember their crap over the next 4 days.

(i've also noticed that the longer i work there.. the shorter my patience gets.)

no m8, not a whore at all... ur doing what ur hired to do and do it well...

i think the only difference between the two of us is for what purpose we get hired. you work the mainstream and get demand, while i happily sit on the sideline to wait for the right moment. you cant do that and make it your living, otherwise you'd starve and live in a trashcan. which is principally why i dont do it for a living. i just do it well after a long long time and happy to do it for my own reasons only.

nothing wrong with either way.

Saturday, I had a woman get upset with me becuase apparently everytime she comes up to me and request a song I don't play it. I know wheres the problem? I told her that I have already played the song requested do you have another request, she did in which I already played that too.

She started to yell and argue how I never play her request. Now I getting upset and told her that I don't have to play her request. My job is to play for the crowd and not one person request. If feel it's a song that will fit into the program of the party, I'll play it. Otherwise, I don't have to play it.

She really got upset and kept telling me to listen to her and I kept saying NO I DON'T HAVE TIME>>> she turned to the bouncer and started to complain to him. He said "what do you want me to do about it. It's his show."

Then she wanted a manager. She ended finding another doorman that was texting on his phone. She started to complain to him and he did not break finger stride which made her upset even more. She asked him if he cared about her complaint and he "NO"... Once again she requested the manager and he told her He's the highest she's going to tonight.

By the end of the night I could see her ranting to her friends and pointing her finger at me an hour later...

My GOD, some peoples kids.

I would have told her she had 5 seconds to leave the dj booth or else she's out.

I used to use that one a lot for that EXACT situation - happens all the time when DJ'ing in a club.

Only ever had to kick maybe 3 people out. Since moving to a strip club - I don;t get nearly 1/4 of the requests I used to. Still get them - but most of the time I can play it pretty quick in between dancers.

Pretty easy to set the mood when It's a T&A bar

LOL fatkat, sooo true. i think everyone has had that one. she must have been having a bad reaction to alcohol and downers. if marijuana was legal, none of these problems would ever happen. sigh...

have you heard about the 15 minute rule?

we invoke that one after getting the same request over and over. and these people just dont understand that sending their friends up to ask for the song, and even asking complete strangers to come up and make the request, is some thing we can see happening. we have that complete view of the club and the only place we cant see is the lobby or the restrooms.
and its not just 15 minutes.. its 15 minutes from when we might have actually played the song.

i have the added joys of things like "could you play this for our buddy who died in iraq?" not to sound callous.. but i dont think he's gonna hear it. i understand what they're trying to say and do, but i'm supposed to be throwing a party.. not a funeral. not even an irish wake.

and how about those big tippers!!! a whole dollar to play your song? i tell most people i dont take tips.

I do the same thing with the tips but the funny thing is that they are pursistant in giving it to me. Even after I explained that I will not promise to play it! And the once that drop on the tip on the counter because I wont take it out of thier hands especially the 5.00 tippers. Now, the 20.00 gentlemans tip because he wants to impress his girlfriend. I play his song since he knows the value to the song. Gotta respect that. I'm not a cheap whore!!!

i will admit to being a cheap whore everynow and then. usually around the end of the pay period. when i'm running out of smokes and caffiene. but they're still gonna wait their turn with the song like everybody else.

which brings us back around to our regularly scheduled thread about stuff that gets on our nerves.

"when you gonna play my song? i tipped you a WHOLE dollar."

a dollar for your lame little song wont put food on the table, gas in the car, or people on my dance floor. wait your turn like a good little b*tch.

"Is that your girlfriend? Is it OK if I dance with her?"

Well, gee.....let me think......she IS sitting in my booth. It could be because she IS my girlfriend. It could be because she doesn't want DICKS like you messing with her. Either way I am gonna say.... NO!
