Hi, i currently lookin 2get a new latop for gigs ...something thatll last me a long time, thats fast and very reliable, also with a big harddrive for about 40gb of music... Ive looked at both the Apple macs and Sony Vaios... lookin at about £1000 to spend!... The sonys altogethers have MUCH better specs than the apple mac's in all areas... But as for DJ's i see all the big bois rolling with apple mac's!?! What to get1 and why?!

The Sony has to have better specs to run all that crap that comes loaded with it.
Mac is the way to go.
I run bootcamp when I am forced to use a pc program.

Although the macs are more expensive, the build quality and components used are better.
I have the 17" Macbook Pro and the Quadcore Nehalem MacPro desktop and they are both excellent.
As Rick says, Vaios are loaded with crapware extraordinaire. I previously had 3 Vaios for DJ use but decided to change to Mac partly because some of the Sony machines are a bit flimsy and I hate all the preloaded crap they come with.
Bootcamp is perfect now, and you can also run Parallels or VMware Fusion to have both Mac and windows running on top of each other. My MacPro at home has that setup and it gives you best of both worlds instantly. I would advise against using parallels for DJ use as it shares the Mac resources but Bootcamp runs windows natively and is no hassle at all.
At least you have the choice of running the VDJ windows or Mac versions, and you can choose which one suits you better.
The big boys are using Macs for Serato or Traktor, it's all part of the show!

Fantastic, which one are you going for?, there are the ones with the new intel i series processors, but you will probably get a good discount on the previous model. There's not too much between them to be honest!

i5 i7's are quite fashionable lately but compared to the last model there isn't much difference in terms of power.

i kind of disagree with the "built better, use better stuff"
look at specs of macs compaired to pc laptops. for the money you can't come close in specs. if you know how to use a pc and what to do and not to do pc does just fine. but this mac vs pc debate has been going on for a LONG time.
i find it funny when i go to clubs and play and the sound guys say "i'm supprised you don't use a mac" sarcastically then i reply with "i know computers in and out so i'm good" mac is mostley about image for most djs now a days I.M.O.
nothing wrong with macs but lets see a 17" quad core i7 500gig 7200rpm HD with a 1 gig video card, 5 usb (1 sata) Firewire, hdmi n vga out, back lit keyboard, full damage coverage for the LIFE of the laptop as well as 2 years IN HOME repair for $1200 I'll take that over a $1500+ i5 with half the specs any day. but to each his own. i tend to see more mac user with serato that are clueless when it comes to computers so it make sense to buy a mac. in a few years mac too will have viruses and trojans etc.

I agree to a point, but a lot of PC manufacturers are putting in cheaper components to compete with each other and the result is plain to see. Apple don't have this problem. I agree about the pricing but having been a Windows user since 3.1 I still find the Mac to be a better built machine. I personally don't like MacOS but bootcamp and parallels mean you don't have to!

I was on the pc side of the debate for years too, got tired of the rhetoric actually.
Then I got tired of the constant viral threats, the driver issues and conflicts, and oh btw I can use my wifi...
Unless you are speaking from the standpoint of experience with a Mac, your points are moot.

And once you use the MBP glass touch sensitive pad, you will never go back to PC.
Now every time I have to use a PC touch pad, I get pissed.

@ Mp3Rick. Your right about that.... Mac is the way to go. I bought a Macbook pro 2.4 core 2 duo and i am very satisfied. You can have the best of both worlds Mac & PC. Macbook pro's are designed for media & thats why many djs like using mac's.

I've always thought about jumping on the "Mac" bandwagon. But I can't really justify spending £1000+ on one when I have a Window's laptop working perfectly.
Maybe one day.....

Last years model prices are sweet right now, if you on the fence I'd say there are plenty of good deals to be had.

Mac is the way to go its designed for audio stuff from the core up.
I feel like starting a campaign against all PC manufacturers due to the low quality of their merchandise of late.
Sony and Dell used to be great now they just just full of IRQ conflicts and other audio performance degrading issues.

I went from a Sony Store bought computer with a better than standard video card and larger drives(back then) 17" Piano Black beauty to the latest MBP and was more concerned about the transition than the cost.
I spent $2400 on the Sony back then [3] and $2200 for this Mac.
My only regret was not having a SD card reader and only 3 usb ports, which with two Denon 3700's and a 4 bay Icy Dock is a suck pill when they all needed dedicated ports.
But what I did do was utilize the express slot with a two port usb card which solves the problem, (also got a wifi SD card which cured the other problem).
So with the install and migration to boot camp with an identical restoration and vm ware which allows me to run both Mac and Pc at the same time, it was very easy and not intimidating in the least, which is a problem for many.
From a support standpoint, part of my decision came from helping users with overbearing anti virus software that many times interfered and I just got fed up with it all.
Seeing the power of W7 machines consumed with back side resources and antivirus to the point where other software slows or freezes is just wrong and you are paying for it. You get all of these awesome specs that just get digested and that's just the latest example.
Personally I made the decision that I'd rather run without it. And it was right at the time when W7 was advertising "Trust Me" that I said "that's enough".
So that's my story, and someone got a hell of a deal on an over built Sony 17" machine.
And I love the graphics display too.
And its thinner and lighter.
And has an 8 hr battery.
And has a multi functional power supply.
And its silent, no fan noise.
And a lit keyboard is standard.
And it has an aluminum body instead of plastic.
And the decision is yours....trust me.....

Simon is right ..... DJ's need power laptops with good components. How many people on here say disable wifi, disable AV, tweak this and that. You shouldn't need to do that. Look at all the problems with 64bit vs 32bit and all the video card problems Windows users are having right now.
The fact that the best and most reliable OS for Djing is XP and it was released in 2001 just sums the whole thing up.
I bought a Macbook Pro 17" and it worked perfectly out of the box. It has it's own (and far better) Asio drivers for the HC-4500 and it's really quick. Although not having windows would be like having an arm cut off, my Macbook Pro can work MacOS for my DJ gigs, Full windows with bootcamp for power use and both running on top of each other with Parallels gives you the best of both worlds at the same time.
The build quality is exemplary and it's all good components inside.
No going back for me.
