Topic: 80's dance set list - Page: 1

Dieser Teil des Themas ist veraltet und kann veraltete oder falsche Informationen enthalten

Who's willing to throw me a song listing (about 40-50) that would work for an 80's theme party. Sort of like a 45th birthday party.
They especially mentioned 80's music that'll keep 'em dancing all night. Last year I mixed in too many 70's (didn't know the difference, I guess).

Can someone help me with a bang-up list of "nothing-but-dance" 80's?

DO NOT PLAY the following songs from the previous posts:

OMD - Enola Gay
Kim Wilde - Kids in America
Camouflage - The Great Commandment
Alphaville - Big In Joan
Murray Head - One Night In Bangkok
Sabrina - Boys
Sandra - In The Heat Of The Night
Phil Collins - Something Happened on the Way to Heaven
Ceejay - Finally
Clubhouse - Deep In My Heart
Erasure - Love To Hate You
Cartouche - Feel The Groove
Linear - Sending All My Love
Sonia - Never Stop Me From Loving You
OMD - Pandora's Box
Adventures Of Stevie V - Dirty Cash
Rock Master Scott - The Roof Is On Fire
Noel - Silent Morning
Bananarama - Love In The First Degree
Pet Shop Boys - What Have I Done To Deserve This
Spagna - Call Me
Kylie Minogue - I Should Be So Lucky
Donna Summer - This Time I Know It's For Real
Dimples D - Sucker DJ
Dino - That's The Way I Like It
Leila K - Got To Get
Alphaville - Big In Japan
Breakfast Club - Never Be The Same
Go West - We Close Our Eyes
Rick Astley - My Arms Keep Missing You

All of these songs are either too depressing, melancholy, obscure, or forgotten in the sands of time (Cartouche - Feel The Groove?? Alphaville - Big In Japan? Spagna - Call Me????? Really? Come on, nobody knows these songs). Even some of the songs I left off the "do not play" list are iffy but these ones are the definite do not play unless you want an empty dance floor. If you're doing an 80's themed party you have to go with the MOST popular songs. Even though a lot of the following songs are cheesy, keep in mind that people associate the 80's with cheese and FUN music, not depressing "art school new wave". Keep in mind that it's not going to be ALL 45 year old people there, there's likely to be younger and older people there so you need to play the most fun and recognizable music that people will actually want to dance to and sing along to.

Add these to your list (in no particular order):

Violent Femmes - Blister In The Sun
Dexy's Midnight Runners - Come On Eileen
Kenny Loggins - Footloose
Tony Basil - Hey Mickey
Madonna - Holiday
Twisted Sister - We're Not Gonna Take It
RUN DMC & Aerosmith - Walk This Way
Prince - Kiss
Young MC - Bust A Move
Rob Base & DJ EZ Rock - It Takes Two
Vanilla Ice - Ice Ice Baby
Tone Loc - Wild Thing
Prince - Let's Go Crazy
Prince - 1999
Denise Williams - Let's Hear It For The Boy
DeBarge - Rhythm Of The Night
Lionel Richie - All Night Long
UB40 - Red Red Wine
Soft Cell - Tainted Love
Bananarama - Venus
Dead Or Alive - You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)
Katrina & The Waves - Walking On Sunshine
The Bangles - Walk Like An Egyptian
Irene Cara - What A Feeling (Flashdance)
The Cult - She Sells Sanctuary
The Clash - Rock The Casbah
Duran Duran - Hungry Like The Wolf
The Eurhythmics - Sweet Dreams
The Go Go's - We Got The Beat
Eddy Grant - Electric Avenue
Madness - Our House
George Michael - Faith
Nena - 99 Red Baloons
The Pointer Sisters - I'm So Excited
The Proclaimers - 500 Miles (I'm Gonna Be)
Eddie Murphy - Party All The Time

My additions might be songs that we've all heard a million times, but guess what? These songs actually keep people dancing.

With all respect dizzyrocks2001 the post asked you to suggest some tracks not to trash the previous ones.

I could as easily trash your crowd cause if they (or you) don't know songs like Spagna - Call Me and some of the other tracks you trashed then you're not really 80's fans.

The songs I listed come not just from my opinion, i was a real eighties dj and those songs brought the house down.

Most of the songs you mention nobody knows are included in several cd and dvd eighties compilations... so just like that it's not just my opinion.

I can understand your opinion (if not your ways) if you or the people you play for did not live the eighties and are just fans of the eighties stuff played on the radio over the last few years, but if you want to play for people over the age of 35 that really lived those days on the club scene you should have more than Toni Basil on your deck.

Obscure... oh my god, all of this tracks are perfectly known in my country (Mexico) and we don't even speak english...

By the way I agree with most of your tracks, however some of the groups you mention in fact do have better tracks than the ones you selected, just to name one... Duran Duran - The Reflex is much better option than Hungry Like A Wolf (also great dance tune). But this is not a critic nor debate post is a playlist suggestion post.

It's okay, dizzyrocks, the input was still very useful, as you gave a valid reason why they may not be easily danceable too. I'm from Maine, USA, and you're right; most people here wouldn't even know or care about some of those you mentioned. I never heard of 90% of them myself (and I'm a DJ, right). :)

He wants people to dance, not reminisce and play name that tune. There's a big difference between what was big in the 80s and what will actually work on a dance floor today. And for the record, I wasn't trashing your list and saying they were bad songs, I was telling him that those songs just won't work to keep a full dance floor, there's a difference. Maybe in Mexico "The Great Commandment" by Camouflage was a big hit, but I'd bet my life that in Canada and the U.S. 9 out of 10 people who grew up in the 80s (me included) wouldn't even know or remember it. Guess what, the majority of people have middle of the road taste in music and the same old songs that you hear on every 80s compilation are the ones that work.

dizzyrocks2001 for the record I did not suggest Camouflage, I love the song but not even when it was brand new it caused a commotion, don't know why, great track.

But i did suggest Spagna - Call me and many others that apply to your following remark:

Same with Alphaville - Big In Japan, Erasure - Love To Hate You, or even OMD - Pandora's Box (everybody knows this one as "Long Long Way").

However as they say in my country, "EN GUSTOS SE ROMPEN GENEROS", wich roughly translated is "IN TASTE GENDERS ARE BROKEN", basically meaning everyone likes what it likes.

If your ever in my country drop me a line will go eighties clubbin, maybe we can bet a few bucks on wich playlist gets more hits, yours or mine.

Just posted this:
