Sorry, I'm not talking about using the mouse to control things on the skin. It's just that the skin VU meter doesn't cjange no matter what I do with the hardware gain controls on the VMS. Is this normal?
The VU Meter isn't necessarily in the red it's just that it's not controllable even if it is in the red.

Telling you to check the skincontrols with the mouse, was just to make shure that the vms works correct now, cause at the beginning of V8 there was a signal that came from the software AND from the controller.....;-)

I wouldn't expect the meter on the skin to change - because that meter is in line before the audio has got to the external mixer.

Remember the audio config is "external mixer" and the VMS4 controls are affecting the sound after it's left VDJ.

That confirms what I suspected in my last post, thanks groovindj.
Given that as a fact, should the screen VU meter go into the red or does it become irrelevant?
I'm assuming it's still relevant and shows me that it's clipping before feeding the VMS?
So I need to set my auto gain to stop it going into the red?
Will the steps above, set tag gain to 0dB and rescan files cure the problem?

If I have to set all my tracks gain tags to 0dB what's the quickest and easiest way to do it?

Simply set autoGain to auto (instead of Auto+Remember) and re-analyze the tracks you see load with distortion.

It would also help if you could analyze ALL your tracks again (just to be sure that all of them will load with zero db)

Ah, OK so that will set the tags? I though it would read them.
I have set auto gain to auto and am now rescanning the entire library.
I may be gone some time ;-

Just tried. Rescan does not change the gain...

Now...this should work:

Make shure you start vdj as admin.
Make shure you have settagsauto to yes
Mark the tracks in the track browser.
open tag editor
you see various input boxes displaying "multible value"
choose gain and type 0,0
apply or hit ok
now your gain in the id3tags should being set to zero
to get the info also to the db, do a rescan
worked at least fine here....mabye someone else can confirm..?

I'll give it a go in a while. Thanks.

Is there a safe way to stop a scan once it's started?
The full scan is going to take all night.

Oh well, I'll take the rest of the night off and try it in the morning.
My bad, I should have tried it on a few files first.

You can still close the software and relaunch. It will actually stops from analyzing the tracks, so that you can try with less files.

Is there no chance of corrupting the database file of I just close it djdad?

Finally had chance to try this. My results aren't good though.

I have been concentrating on one track only for speed of testing. It currently peaks at +10dB on the skin vu meter for the major part of the track.
So following your instructions.
1. Run VDJ as admin
2. Set settagsauto to on (it was off)
3. Selected the track and opened Tag Editor.
4. Gain Tag is currently -1.1dB
5. Set Gain tag to 0dB
6. Play track, No difference in vu meter
7. Check Gain Tag value - Still 0dB
8. Rescan file
9. Check Gain Tag - Now reset to -1.1dB

My observations:
1. Nothing seems to affect the vu meter in the skin.
2. In the example above would changing the gain from -1.1dB to 0dB not actually make it worse in theory as I am effectively increasing the gain?
3. I can't get any change in the Gain Tag in VDJ Tag editor to be persistent. It get rewritten on file scan.

To be honest I can't hear any clipping in the final output but my worry is if I can't accurately set the output from VDJ and it is clipping it's not going to do the sound quality any favours and neither will it do the following stages, mixer/amp/speakers any good.

Just to add. I have just tried setting the gain tag to -10dB so I should notice a decent difference. It made no difference whatsoever.

set gain to auto or auto and remember...?

geposted Tue 27 May 14 @ 5:12 am
Set to auto as suggested earlier :-)

Just tried it with autoGain set to Auto+Remember.
Interestingly when I set the gain tag to 0dB it is now persistent in that it doesn't revert to -1.1dB when I rescan it.
VU meter levels are still showing to high though.

Clive, how are you determining that the track is reaching +10dB?

What skin are you using?

I didn't think any skins had dB markings (I've not seen one) and as it's a digital audio signal, the max would be 0dB (with a limiter in place to prevent overload).
