Topic: if you had £1000 to spend....

Dieses Thema ist veraltet und kann veraltete oder falsche Informationen enthalten.

I have recently been givin some compensation money, and i've decided to spend it on improving my setup.
I am currently running from a reasonable desktop pc. (thinking of getting a laptop or mac mini £400-700)
I have timecoded vinyl with the maya 44 usb.
2x ttx1s
matrix 3 mixer (thinking of getting a new mixer, dont like the upfaders being so stiff)

i was thinking of, as mentioned, getting a laptop or mac mini, a new mixer and possibly some sort of midi controller.
the question is.....
1- have you got any advice on laptops/mac mini or any recommended mixers or midi interfaces.
2- if you had £1000 to improve your own setup, what would you invest it in.

thanks

Adam

i think you should wait with macs that someone test VDJ on them. I tested it with iMac Core Duo and it works.

I am asking about laptops here on forum. Answers are like: the best is intel core duo or p4 HT. So what can i say, buy one of them :D
But for $1000 you can't get laptop like this.

If i had $1000, i would invest it into new XP10 (i think they will be xp05, but i am not sure) controllers ;)

@Xeon, we are working in pounds here :), which has the value of over $1.5 to £1, so he has $1500+ (not sure what it is exactly though, probably more).

A good place for DJ gear as you might know is www.decks.co.uk , best prices and great level of service, you can look on there and you'll see most popular products have been reviewed, you can also compare specs side by side, something which helps me when deciding what to buy.

You'll get more bang for your buck if you buy A Windows Laptop over A MAC, there are many good internet deals and perhaps better deals in the paper, just be sure it has A min of 512mb Ram (ideally 1024mb and most are upgradable to this or beyond), You'll need to spend about £800 for A good mid-market Laptop :).

A mixer is A bit of A personal thing, what you like the 'look' of and what feels best, the way you mix and the features you need, so hard to advise here: Denon, Vestax and select models from Numark are all high quality mixers in the mid price range.

Personally I'd rather get a windows laptop over a mac for the fact that you get more performance for less. I ordered my DJ equipment from jbsmusic.com if you phone them they will price match items from other shops and may even give you a discount if you ask nicely.

Bagpuss I think the exchange rate is more around $1.7 to the £1 although after comission you are likely right. When I was in New York two months ago I used my cashcard in an American ATM and got $1.73 to the £1 or something similar.

Indeed, I jokingly offered my mate $1.40 to the £1 and that's exactly what he got at the travel agents in NYC; I went to an ATM and got $1.73!

Just worked out after the charges it was $1.65 but still not as bad as my mate.

**** 15FEB06 *** , *BANK OF AMERICA , NEW YORK NY , USD 100.00, RATE 1.7337, CHARGE £1.33, ERTF £1.38

**** = blanked information, gotta love online banking :)

The Core Duo is best at the moment and one you should be getting. You can get one for that 1000 if you look around.

However if you are actually planning to use the laptop without external keyboard/mouse, it is obviously good idea to try how the keyboard, pad and display is with a certain brand. For example if you go to shop and try couple Acer brand laptops, you can be fairly sure that other models in the same price range as the one you tried have similar feel and display. This is good to keep in mind since if you are going for the Core Duo since these are fairly new models that have it and you may not be able to check these new models in person that are just coming out.

Of course if you must have the mixer & midi controller (maybe both in one = DJM-800 for example) then you can forget about getting Duo too for that money. The Solo and Pentium-M models are ok for VDJ but even now there are few feature options that will make these sweat and possibly skip too and in future new features may need power that these non-Duo just won't have.

The new Apple Mac Duo have some issues, not to mention higher price, so if you are looking for those, I'd wait a while so the hardware issues are fixed for sure.
