what does the asterisk (*) mean in the bpm section of the playlist???

it means that VDJ has marked it as a good song for automix, or like it's easy to mix based on it's bpm structure

Does it not mean the BPM is a guess? and as near as Virtual DJ can get it to the real BPM of the song? I thought the asterix meant that it was not an accurate BPM, but a best guess.

no, it's the other way round Gaz. an asterix indicates that not only has the tempo been calculated accurately but the track has also been beatmapped and is suitable for automix.
