Topic: VDJ Keylock vs. CDJ Master Tempo - Page: 2

Thanks for the advice,

I haven't been able to download from CNET as I am running Mac OS and I think that the trial version must be only for PC users, however from the comments of the other users in this thread it doesn't seem that there is much difference between version 4 and version 5.

Again I have tried tweaking the advanced controls to improve the quality of playback but have not arrived at a good quality sound. Does anyone have any recommended settings? What does the term "spatialization" refer to?

Maybe the difference in MT quality has something to do with the live sample rate conversion rather that the actual quality of the MP3, as MT quality on CDJs sounds better even on MP3s burnt to CD.

I can add that in my tests VDJ has the worst KEYLOCK/MASTERTEMPO compared to CDJ and Serato. Serato has the best sounding MasterTempo. VDJ keylock makes beats sound uneven and not smooth. Very annoying. But developers think that this is not the priority they should be working on.

Buy the way, try using timecode vinyl or CD and change pitch with KeyLock ON. It takes couple seconds for keylock to kick in. It's embarrassing.

I tried to get Virtual DJ and the SL-1 Box to talk to each other last night. I installed the SL-1 driver on my PC and used that. I have the CDJ1000 and was able to get some of the functions to work but not all of them. (ex. fast forward, que, loop, and master tempo wouldn't work) I believe there may be something I'm doing wrong with the timecode configuration but I'm not sure. Has anyone gotten this to work with all of the CDJ1000 functions and if so can you tell me what the proper audio configuration should be?

Affirmative. With high settings, the overall Key Lock features is IMHO actually quite good. But the problem is in what I would call "disappearing kickdrums". Just pick a typical House/Trance track with a pure basedrum loop like they all have at the very beginning. Acitvate key lock and start changing speeds upwards. Pick a usual value like +1-3 %.

If you listen closely you will hear, that most of the song sounds fine, but every now and then a beat looses it´s "kick". It sounds like it is filtered out or something. It´s like saying *BANG* *BANG* *ANG* *BANG* ---- I think you get it.

From what I know about the techniques behind key locking, in simple words it´s like leaving out samples (when speeding up). So my best guess is, that those "disappearing" kicks happen, if the sample with the "spike" of the baseline is left out. Maybe something can be done about the algorithm in VDJ to compensate for this?

But hey, maybe someone here knows about a setting in the performance to get rid of this issue?

Low quality MT, while consuming little resources, is totally lame and generates tons of audio artefacts. The problem is that it is on by default, so you have plenty of users using this low quality MT not necessariliy aware of it and it destroys sound quality...
If you add to this that you can't disable it easiliy (before 5.1 you could disable it in the the skin but no more from this version you have to do some keybinding), it's a big bug to me, and it seems nobody cares. Also with autogain sometimes clipping the audio, it can sound even crappier.

I wish the high quality master tempo was optimized so I could use it on my slower laptop...

What settings are you guys using for Scratch and Master Tempo in the Performances tab? Make sure you have "Enhanced Algorithm" selected in the Scratch area, otherwise the Master Tempo will remain at "Fast" regardless of what you set/see.

Regards,

Scott
