I glad to see that this thread is getting a second breath. My situation is unique in the fact that the manager trusts my instincts and decisions. The night in question was a less than desireable crowd and most of the requests would have been for music that I simply don't have; on purpose. Out of the 500+ in the crowd, there was just the one problem customer. Everyone else was like, "No requests? Okay. Thanks."
This situation led to the current protocol:
There is a security person stationed right next to the booth all the time. I have a half door to the booth that I will lean over to take requests. I can then have a hand free that only the security person can see. We have a simple thumbs up or down letting him know if the person needs to be escorted out. Rudeness and all the other bad attitudes are no longer tolerated. Problem customers are escorted out. Depending on how civil they are about leaving determines when they can come back.
"I have worked at at least two clubs that decided to change over the crowd by playing a completely diffenrt kind of music then had been played in the past. Then it was managements decision, not mine. And it was U-G-L-Y!!!!!"
It's just like a radio station that changes it's format. If you don't like what's played, find another station. Bitching at the station isn't gonna get you anywhere.
