Hey guys.
I just got my hands on Virtual Vinyl and I am trying to use the crossfader on my Numark DXMPRO to control the video transition fader. I have gone through the manual and followed all the instructions but I cannot seem to get it working properly. I find that when I try to crossfade back and forth between songs that it will occassionally switch the video signal but I cant seem to figure out what I am doing to actually make it fade.
Can someone please explain to me:
a) What is the best settings to have in order to use an external mixer to control the video fade?
b) How does virtual vinyl detect an audio crossfade from the mixer? - I desperately want to know the answer to this so that I can at least understand how it is supposed to work
c) Is it actually possible to get precise video fades when using an external mixer's crossfader to control the video fade?
Looking forward to some feedback.
Thanks guys!
Flago

Hi,
There's lots of ways to control the video crossfader in Cue, unfortunately though you can't do it straight through the DXMPRO as far as i know.
To control the video crossfader, you need a MIDI device. As far as I can see, the DXM doesn't provide midi functions though.
From the looks of that mixer I'd guess you're quite heavily into scratching.
The easiest way to do it is simply select "default" as the video transition type in Cue, then click on the box so it lights up. Your not technically moving the crossfader with any hardware, but the software will move the video crossfader when you start the second song. The default transition also spins the videos as you scratch (looks pretty cool!) Finally, when you stop the other song the video crossfader will move all the way across. Also, you can assign a keyboard button to activate the transition (say the space bar) to make it less work on the mouse. You can also make some other keyboard shortcuts to instantly crossfade the video from one side to another.
This works ok, but doesn't really give you many creative options as far as video goes.
Then basicially all the other options are some sort of hardware MIDI controller which features a cross fader. You can make the crossfader move either just the video, or control the video and audio at the same time.
Bottom of the market is the hercules dj control mp3 i think. Will work fine but it's a pretty cramped layout.
There's a handful of these (check for a forum topic called "ultimate guide to controllers")
New on the market are the numark total control and the vestax VCI-1000.
Next up would be to buy a whole new mixer which can send MIDI commands. Lots of people on here have the elcer NUO4, it's very good and has additional knobs for effects, etc. Also, the Pioneer DJM800 can do midi crossfading. Then finally you could look at the Allen & Heath Xone 3D (if you've just robbed a bank, that is).
I'm sure somebody'll jump in if i've forgotten anything, hope that helps though.
