I've seen a number of posts in the past commenting on how poor the MK2's sound card is.
I've only ever used the Mk1 & Mk2 as sound cards with VDJ. I've done sets with other DJ's who have used various CD Decks (CDJ1000s etc), we've all hooked into the same mixer and faded between each other and i've never noticed that my audio is of a inferior quality and neither have they.
Now i'm not leaping to Hercules' defence here, just artcilulating my observations. Trying to decide whether it is worth investing in a new sound card.
Now i don't doubt all these posts refering to poor quality as i'm sure most of you out there really know your stuff, so i was wondering, can a decent sound system disguise the inferior soundcard quality?

bad soundquality can be caused by slighy off settings
the mk2 is a good mid range card
there are better ones such as maya 44 , and numark virtual vinyl
i find its alot better if you run it in asio mode and if you use the asio for all drivers instead of the default herc ones

The potential quality of the Hercules MK2 is very good, of course there are better, but it's a very usable soundcard in any setting. The capitalists of the community will tell you "It's cheap and you get what you pay for" whilst the perfectionists will tell you "It sounds aweful compared to the..."
But in reality it is very servicable soundcard and controller, I use it in some very big clubs and I can tell you that the output is loud and clean, there is not in any way a difference between the MP3s I play through VDJ and the CDs I play through the Denons, indistinguishable sound differences, hence is why I use it every weekend in very big clubs with huge applause :).

It's a decent soundcard.
You get a fairly good deal whn you buy the Hercules though.
Midi mixer - if you want to use it - little small/cramped
USb 5.1 sourround card Function
Asio soundcard function to use timecodes with.
Free copy of VDJ home.
Good package deal for 300.00 - or what ever you pay for it now.

I am new to DJing. I have been doing it since December. My next door neighbor is the one that got me into it. He has all the good toys i.e. B-52's Matrix 1000, Numark cd tables, and a mixer. He uses VDJ and a sound card that goes into his laptop. He uses it in Mono mode so one RCA is left deck and the other is Right Deck and fades with his 4-channel mixer. With me I was just starting off and I wanted something I could use to controll the software and at the same time output the music. So I bought a Hercules DJ Console MK2. I love it. I had some sound quaility issues when I first used it on my new speakers, B-52's Matrix 2000. I read the forum and I tweaked windows and VDJ. I actually use the Hercules ASIO drivers (I can't figure out how to use ASIO4ALL). I noticed a big inprovement. Skyfxl has a great blog on how to tweak windows and VDJ. I am perfectly happy with my setup. One day I will move up to timecoded vinyls. I wish I could find out how to work the DMX lighting control in VDJ. I want to use it to control my lights, but I don't know what I need to get to have my lights interface with VDJ.
