Right now I have 2 shuttle systems. One is connected and ready to go. The other I carry as
a backup, but it is not connected. I have a dual cd player incorporated in my setup.
I want to get rid of the cd player, in order to lighten the load.
My thoughts are to get a laptop without an external drive. I want to put VDJ on the laptop and also load music files onto same drive. Would this work out okay? Remember this is only for backup.

It would work fine. Once VirtualDJ and the required windows kernel services are loaded into memory they are unlikely to be paged, leaving your harddrive free for music access. Even if this wasn't the case, it shouldn't really matter. Reading a 10mb compressed music file isn't exactly a strain for a harddrive no matter how fragmented the file is. In such a scenario an external harddrive would not be required.

Thanks.
Don't understand the kernel services, or paging.
But if I am reading you right any decent laptop should be good for a backup.
I assume I would still need a gig of ram.

Yes, 1Gb of ram is recommended, ram modules are very cheap these days ;)
CPU should be some 2,8 or 3.0 Celeron or 2.0 Pentium (old ones, if you plan to buy used one), if not, get some Celeron M or Pentium M model, any will be ok for backup.
1Gb Ram
80 or 120GB hdd (also cheap)
If you use audio only you can disable page file for sure if you set Max Load option on 15 minutes.
For services, check Simon's blog (Skyfxl)
Hope that helps.
