Hi guys, my TCV and cartridges/stylus finally arrived yesterday afternoon, so i thought i'd post my first experience and get some of your thoughts and comments on a few things.
I ordered the Shure M-447 T which come pre-mounted on Technics headshells and 2 Numark timecoded Vinyls.
I thought i'd try them straight off at work last night, with my CD's ready and waiting in case there were any problems.
The first thing I noticed was the vinyls were slightly warped. Not enough to see while holding them, but enough to notice when it was spinning (more about this later)
First off, i was very impressed in how accurate the Auto-Config was (100% signal straight off). Playing on different setups in different clubs every night means this is very important to me as i have to set up from scratch on different equipment every night.
I started off trying the Smart mode, but i wasn't very impressed with this. Cueing wasn't accurate. I found that once i found my cue point, if i left the deck and went back to it my cue point had moved considerably. Also when I altered the pitch of the Vinyl, the skin slider and software was unresponsive.
Next I tried 'Relative' mode and found the same problems. Finally I selected 'Absolute' mode and it all seemed to work very nicely, which i admit did come as a bit of a surprise, because I'd heard it was the hardest setting to get good performance from. Even the pitch was responding properly in this mode. Any reason why this should be the case?
In all 3 modes i had 100% quality signal from beginning to end of the vinyl.
I also found that in all modes, when the timecode finished, the track stopped, so there must be a setting I've overlooked that someone could point out to me.
Back to the warped Vinyl. I imagine this is the reason why my BPM wasn't constant and continuously moving up and down. Any thoughts people?
Overall, it started off hard work and worrying, but turned into a more enjoyable experience using the Absolute mode and i relaxed and enjoyed myself using the system.
I will have a look through the other postings and see if i can answer some of my own questions, but each case is often a little different, so please feel free to help me out, offer advice or comments :)
Cheers, Gary.

Well having had a quick play on your system in the club last night, quite tempted to have a dabble in this timecode malarky myself!
Wonder if it can be made to work with Ray Von's console that I bought off ebay last week? ;-)

Ha ha, that is a beast of a console!!
Yeah, I'm enjoying the time codes, puts a bit of fun back in the DJing game again.
Still waiting to here from anyone who can offer some help though. After using the time codes for about an hour, the software starts becoming unresponsive to pitch adjustments, even though is have 100% quality signal. :(

So it seems the VDJ boffins are stumped! Thats a first!
geposted Tue 23 Oct 07 @ 7:47 pm
What was your question? I don't see it.
geposted Tue 23 Oct 07 @ 9:05 pm
Gary what verision of VDJ do you have?
geposted Tue 23 Oct 07 @ 9:05 pm
There are quite a few questions in there Charlie5, but i'm not writing it all out again! lol
I'm using VDJ5r4. I've just updated to r5 but i don't think that will make any difference from what I can see.

Is your pitch sensitivity at 2000? If you go under your timecode settings you should see it. I had the same issue before, but when I changed that, it took care of it.

Mess with it in smart mode. In relative mode, the pitch will not adjust on VDJ screen. It will only adjust in smart mode.

Thanks, thats a start. I didn't know it wouldn't adjust in relative mode. My pitch sensitivity was at 200, which was the setting i was using timecoded cd's with and that worked perfectly. I tried increasing it too 400 but that didn't help.
Its ok to start with, but after an hour or so it just stops responding and when a cue a track from the beginning with the pitch at 0 on the turntable, the pitch on the skin jumps back to about -2 as if its out of sync. I click on the button in the middle of the skin pitch fader to reset it to 0 and set the deck to 0 and its ok for a bit, then starts recognising 0 on the turntable as -2 on the skin again.

Ahhh caught em this time. Sorry I was browsing from my iPhone.
Try to tinker with your settings until you find the sweet spot. I believe I have mine at 1200 ms and 400 ms (lead time and pitch sensitvity). Also, I have been using relative mode with TCV and the pitch slider does adjust in the program and skin.

Welcome back CharlieFive :)
The problem is that i have tweaked and got everything working, but it only works for about an hour. Isn' that a bit strange?

heres a heads up for the guys using tcv. If you are used to spinnnig normal vinyl then set your pitch sensitvity to 0. Now your pitch will react just like normal vinyl. When i set my configuration to 2000ms or any other vdj just tried to smooth the pitch and I just didn't want this. Just a tip

Hey Charlie,
my pitch doesnt react in relative mode on the slider and program skin. It used but doesnt anymore. I havent tried with the newest version 5 but I need to test it out. But with Verision 5 rev2 it didnt for me

I can and still do spin regular vinyl at times. When I change have my pitch sensitivity that low I get a breathing effect from the waveform. True though. The lower the pitch sensitivity the faster that the program will match up with the turntable. I personally went through every 50ms until I found the setting that worked for me. I believe that its at 1200ms. It reacts a little slower but the waveform is ok.

I may have been using my CDJ's with 5 rev2 so I'm not positive as I would have been using smart mode. It does with the newest version though. Try it out and report back.

What only works for an hour? The pitch staying aligned with the TT and the VDJ skin? If your pressing sync you are going to through the sliders off. If mine get to far off, I bring it back to 0 on the deck and manually (with the mouse) bring it to 0 in the VDJ skin.

charlie five - well thats the setting that works best for me. Each to there own I supose!

Yes, the pitch being aligned only works for an hour, then it stops working. It doesn't then work ok for another hour, it keeps starting off misaligned on every track after that, even if i manually reset it.
I never use the sync button.

Well after making some adjustments, i had the same problem again last weekend.
Everything is fine in Absolute mode.
In Smart & Relative mode, setting pitch on my turntable is registering at about -3 on the skin. If i reset the pitch slider on the skin and the turntable, it still happens.
ALSO
I'm finding that in Smart & Relative mode i can't rewind the timecode enough cue the start of the song. Now i'm not talking a few seconds or beats, i mean a full minute into the song and yet i've not got this problem in Absolute mode.
Does anyone know what the problem is?
Gary
