LOL, Huey, you know we been doing this long enough to rock whatever is put in front of us fam! It's amazing this is even an issue. I remember the days, where we'd used to use wobbly belt drive with straight arms just to perfect our crafts until we could afford the a tt1200 and we didn't care, it was and still is the love for the game for me! I mean in 1990, one of my needles broke, so I used my moms old school stereo set that held 6 records at a time to rock a party in the projects and not one word about it from anyone, plus people see me and still talk about that party to this day. Nowadays, too many DJ egos belong on the planet stupid!
I'm just saying, lol!

I have had people come up to me and "say" they are DJ's. They have asked questions about my gear of choice. When I had the touchscreens, most of them were speechless. They would ask what it was and what planet I got it from. When I told them I designed and built it myself, they really were awestruck. I ended up ditching the touchscreen setup because I couldn't trust it's reliability. Since going to 2 Numark NDX400's and a Numark M3 2 channel mixer, I have had more guys come up and be critical of my gear choices. My philosophy has always and will ALWAYS be that the gear doesn't matter.
Try this experiment:
Next gig you have, stand at the door at the end of the night and actually ask people as they are leaving if they had a good time or not. Then ask them to name one piece of gear from your kit.
Most common response will be computer or laptop. Not PC or MAC specifically, but just the vanilla terms laptop or computer. You might get lucky and get a brand name or two on cdj's, mixer, or turntable from some people, but the vast majority of people will have NO CLUE. The ONLY people who even KNOW the difference are other DJ's. If another DJ has the time to show up at YOUR show AND criticize your choice of gear, then you win: You are working a paid gig, and he is NOT.

I regularly get calls from friend bar/club owners and djs asking for my opinion, this is my conclusion...
Turntables:
Big & Heavy, Fragile records, Fragile needles and you need to know how to set up the toner arm properly... Crates of records, or Time Codes and a soundcard...
CD Players:
Smaller & compact. You must move around a good amount of CDs, when using timecodes (MP3s) many features of the CD Player are useless, unless they are MIDI compatible but that drives the price up...
Controllers:
Compact! A good investment in one will provide you with a 4in/out soundcard that will allow you to use CDs and/or Turntables should you need to. Platters are getting bigger which is good for scratching, and software developers are making mapping files for the more popular brands so compatibility issues are everyday less and less.
To club owners i tell them to just buy a a workhorse of an amp and speakers. Generally those DJs with 2 turntables will have the mixer to practice at home, same with those who use CD players...
Those who have Controllers are able to plug them in the same way...
Ive noticed at some clubs ive played recently, they no longer have CD players, just a good 4 channel mixer such as Pioneer or A/H...

Invariably at the heart of any DJ set-up is shit music, I notice this where ever I go, no matter what equipment or software is being used that same shit sound is banging in my ears, so if you're trying to maintain the status quo, the standard, start with shit music then we'll talk about the shit for manipulating your shit.

To a mobile DJ and some club resident djs, There is No standard. To a Big time superstar DJ, There is a standard. They will Use The Pioneer CDJ 2000's and some Hip Djs use Technics 1200's.

I bet the handful of "big time" "big name" DJ's would use which ever brand that gave them the most "sponsorship." Of course, here in the midwest, unless your name is David Guetta, then not too many people will even know who you are, much less give a $hit about what gear you're using. The saddest part is, I could pre-record an entire 4 hour set of nothing but current Top 40 with a sprinkling of some mid to late 90's stuff, put that mix on an i pod, patch the ipod into the PA, then periodically speak on the mic, and 90% of the crowd wouldn't even know the difference. As long as it was the same music they play on the radio...

Some Djs will try a deck that is given part of a sponsorship but, their number one prefference is a Pioneer deck. You Have Little Louie Vega, Roger Sanchez, David Guetta, Martinez brothers, Dennis ferrer, Tony moran, Omar Santana, Dead maus and tons more. Just do a youtube search and look at them when they play in their events around the world. Its the same equipment all the time. I dont care what they use but when you are pro, you will most likely have a bunch of these decks.
