Hi! I was wondering if anyone could recommend any quality slip mats for turntables. The current slip mats I have are just not cutting it, so would love to hear some recommendations. Thanks!

well as mentioned above sicmats are great. if you find the slipmats aren't slipping enough try using waxpaper between the platter and felt slipmat.

The best is to make your slipmat! You can do it on the same way as printing on T-shirts!
I have a friend who works with printing on T-shirts and he made me some examples on slipmats. You just need one color slipmat ;)

i use plain old felt mats and have a piece of a plastic shopping bag from the super market under it. I just cut the bag down the sides and trace the slipmat on it, then cut it and sure its a little smaller then the mat itself. Same idea as wax paper, but good if you dont have any on hand, plus i got sooo many bags it's not even funny.

Butter Rugz are decent slip mats but they are geared more towards scratch artists. In my opinion, they're too slippery.

Yes, there is such a thing as too much slip! makes cuing a track a pain like you got belt drive TT's.

My biggest problem with too much slip is beatmatching. You try to speed up the record just a hair, you push it a tad and the record breaks loose and start spinning forward from barely a push.

Butter Rugs are great for scratch but I think they're too slick for regular beatmatching. Another good trick you can do is put Butter Rugs on the bottom but if you need to beatmatch put your regular slipmats on top. It's still slick but you can take off the top quickly if you need to scratch.

I tried the butter rugs but didn't like the feel at all. regular felt mats with wax paper felt so much better. I also tried the plastic paper but didn't feel quite as nice either...felt similar to butter rugs.

interesting DVL, i wondered about the difference between wax paper and plastic shopping bags, i suppose it might also depend on the amount of torque the turntable has.

definatelly!!!! the TTx has lots of torque (same as the TT500 from Numark) and the wax paper helps reduce the friction for scratching. without the wax paper its almost like trying to stop a drill bit when spinning using nothing but your barehands. Now I'd play around with the different combinations available although I find the wax paper feels more natural then plastic or butter rugs

Thanks for the info guys, I ended using the dust cover from one on my vinyl albums (clear paper you put the record, record case in), and scratching has been phenomenal since that point!

Sfunny that's what I did in 1974 when it was hard to buy slipmats.
