Does anyone know of a video format that will work without the artifacts? Moderators? Help please?

Well since you asked nicely, VOB is the recommended format.

Thank you for your response and sorry - didn't mean to sound rude.... My boss just spent a lot of money on a new system and it's not working well.... Ive got him and others relying on me. I can't walk in, set this up and and have the VOB's look bad. (or worse yet have the program crash) after selling them on the superior quality of a MAC system running CUE. We chose Numark Cue and Virtual Vinyl to PLAY VIDEOS. We expect quality. The VOB's are not looking good. flickering and Pixelated..... Are there any preferences i can change to eliminate this?
If there is no simple solution:
Is this a known issue that will be fixed with a future release? is there a rough date as to when this problem will be resolved?
Any advice you can give would be helpful.
Please direct me. what is my next move?

Not that this willl help your situation, but what video out are you using?
Svideo or DVI? What are you viewing on?

I'm viewing it on the floating window .... the same screen as my numark interface.... but soon i'll have it outputing to 3 projectors and 4 TV's via S video

Steve Lynch says the videos are working flawless without artifacts on his mac. Not sure what format he's using but I'm using VOB ripped straight from DVD and there are artifacts and blocky corruption on every video, everywhere. That is, on screen in the floating window, the preview windows on the skin and the s-video output.
I also see these artifacts when going in super slow motion, like frame by frame.
So I'm not sure what format Steve is using, but I'd sure like to know.

I'd sure like to know as well.. im using CUe... are you? is anyone on this forum using numark cue? with success? no artifacts?

I also get artifacts in my video using a MabBook Pro. All of my video has been ripped into vob format.
geposted Thu 10 May 07 @ 2:22 am
What exactly is artifacts?
I have been getting something similar to what you guys are talking about. In my showing video (the top screen in the video skin) im getting flashes of the preview video in the bottom left corner. Its driving me freakin nuts.

artifacts are boxes that flash in and out... the image looks pixelated.... im not sure what the problem is causing your boxes but think i saw it on this forum somewhere.
I spoke with technical support at numark this morning... and they said the artifacting on the video out was due to a bug in MAC OS 10.4.9 and that it could be corrected if I revert back to 10.4.8... i'll give it a try tonight and let you know.....

Not true. The artifacts are present in 10.4.8. As I've mentioned before, the problem lies in the fact that VOB's are interlaced and Mac VDJ is having trouble de-interlacing them on the fly. You can run your VOB's through a conversion software like Visual Hub that will de-interlace your VOB's and save them as a mpegs (or whatever you like... however, I would suggest mpeg as Mac VDJ is pretty limited on what codecs it can read).
The downside is that this process will take time and more compression (ick). Bottom line is you shouldn't have to do this as it is not a problem on Windows. As a result, I've been running VDJ in Bootcamp for several weeks now without a single crash. Getting video out to a projector, two televisions and additional monitor was a bit of a process, but I finally got it to work. I'm surprised no one at VDJ will directly address the artifact issue or give an idea when it will be fixed.
I bought my Mac to run OSX not Windows. I bought Virtual DJ because of the Mac release.

OK after that post i recieved another email from Numark tech support (who have been great and very responsive)
I did just
get
another reply from one of the engineers. My initial impression was
that the
problem was only 10.4.9. He informed me, however, that the problem is
actually in both 10.4.9 and 10.4.8. The problem you are having does
not
happen on alll systems though. It seems as though the MAC OS is not as
efficient with the video hardware as it should be. Normally, we'd
assume
the video card you have would be fine. However, due to the problems in
the
OS, it performs more sluggishly with the video hardware than it should.
Upgrading to a better video card would offer you a solution to
counteract
the video sluggishness. Many users are also running bootcamp and XP on
their macs. Until Lop[ard comes out, this bootcamp/XP setup actually
runs
video better on the same hardware than the mac OS does. A step or two
up on
the video card would be advisable in either case though.
We are anticipating that your existing setup would run fine once
Leopard
comes out though.

I think i may have to go this route... i hate to do it as i too bought this setup to run on MAC only.....
I heard a rumor that running numark cue or VDJ in bootcamp is a bad idea because the video out does not work.... is this true? you said you had it working..... can you give me an idea of what i should expect if i go along this path?
and once i do switch to windows OS.. will the problem go away? or will i still see artifacts on my VOB's and will i then have to switch to Mpeg.....
what should i do first switch to mpeg and try on Mac OS? or switch to bootcamp and try VOB's?

Do all the vobs do this on your system? If so , convert one dvd to MPEG and see how they run. Should be a simple test...

I'll say it again. The keyword here is "De-Interlace". If you convert the VOB to MPEG without de-interlacing you will get the same artifacts. De-interlace the file and abracadabra... the artifacts are gone. Trust me, I've done plenty of testing... not to mention I've worked in video post-production for several years.
Now about getting practical video out of a intel Mac laptop while in Boot Camp... I hope you have a MacBook Pro. If you only have a MacBook... no dice.
Assuming you have a MacBook Pro, go out and buy yourself an Apple DVI to VGA adapter. Despite Apple's claims on their website... it WILL work in Bootcamp when set up properly. Now you'll need to go and buy a VGA to TV adapter. These can be expensive. I found one for relatively on the cheap called "PC to Video EZ" by Sewell and it works just "swell". It has RCA, S-Video, and VGA out.
If the image looks bad at first, toggle the overscan button on the device and it clears right up (it's a Window's thing as it doesn't happen on the Mac side).
Granted, I wasn't too happy to have to go out and buy a couple of adapters after spending several hundred on the software... but it's the only way to get it to work and I was tired of sitting on my hands. I hope this helps!

Well its a short term work around. Thank for your feedback on this issue.
Question how and what did you convert the vob to MPEG with to get the deinterlacing ?

Good news, our favorite video convertor Visual hub does this when converting to MPEG2.
It's in the advanced tab. Little box called 'Deinterlace' ( Used to remove artifacts on TV show and such)
Interesting that it says thats what Deinterlacing does , huh?

all the VOB's Yes... I tried changing one over to Mpeg and WOW.. no more artifacting ! at least for that one... Please tell me what can be said about the sound quality between VOB's and MPEGs?

VOB = MPEG. The video compression is the same. If you use the same bitrate, quality should be similar, just another "generation" further away from the original. Use correct audio settings and the sound quality will be identical (don't try and further compress the already compressed audio).
