with a fair amoint of backspinning and scratching with an average turntablist quality needle, about how long would a TCV last before it will need replacing?

hard to tell, depending on the usage and needle setup. They tend to last a good while but to keep things simple just buy a spare so you have it when you need it.

have had 1 pair of gen 1 TCV for AGES (18 months now?) i just use one side day to day (and dont give a toss about hench backspins and other damaging moves) and the other side spick and span and sparingly used.
there is a noticeable difference in the number of pops and crackles i get using the knakared side to the clean side but not enough to make me worried about getting new vinyl
