Topic: Dragging into Virtual folder freezes VDJ

I recently purchased a laptop with Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T5300, 1.73GHz, 2GB RAM, 256MB dedicated video memory, 17" screen and Windows Vista Home Premium for Video DJing/Karaoke. The only programs I've installed on the computer so far are the VirtualDJ demo and the recommended MAYA 44 USB ASIO drivers. My music resides on a rack-mounted firewire 400/800 dual - parallel ATA removable harddrive enclosure with 2-seagate 750gig hardrives installed.

I've been using a lesser laptop for audio DJ/Karaoke using PCDJ-FX and a DAC-3 for the past three years. No crashing problems.

My new computer and DAC-3 have been working great using the VirtualDJ demo. No problems using the local database and search function playing mp3s, mpeg-2 videos and karaoke. No problem that is until I started creating Virtual folders. For some reason every now and then when I do a search in the local database and drag a result into a virtual folder, the program freezes. I then need to close and restart the program to continue. This happened 3 or 4 times while creating a virtual folder containing only about 20 songs.
I can't justify purchasing until I get a stable working environment. Any ideas on what the problem might be? Has anyone else run into this problem? My demos up in a day or so and I'd like to solve this so I can purchase a stable program. I'm going to need something very soon and I don't want to install the discontinued PCDJ-FX on this new computer if possible.

I was hoping that someone here could help me with my Virtual Folder crashing problem. Today's the last day of my demo and if I can't figure this out, I guess I'm gonna have to just move on and not purchase VDJ. I really wanted to make this work because I'd like to buy something that supports my DAC-3, but it doesn't bode well if I can't get any help solving this problem. I've written in this forum and sent an e-mail to the company with no response. I've learned over the years that support is an important part of owning a software product and considering you are in England and I am in the US... I don't want to shell out my hard earned bucks if I can't get this program working without freezing up on me every time I try to create a song list. It should work, I've got a screamin' new laptop and set-up with no other programs installed to cause conflicts.

Here is some other input on the symptoms of my problem. 1) I disconnected my DAC-3 to see if that could be an issue but, it still froze after dragging only 4 additional songs into the virtual folder I created. 2) When the program freezes the following happens... the text in the search window will not disappear when I try to click within the search window. 3) I can click on "My Computer" and although the +'s before each folder and harddrive will display, the folders themself won't. If I click on the virtual folder I've created, the songs load into the center window even though their names don't display. I know this is true because when I double-click on a song in the center window it loads into one of the players and although it reads the name of a search result that was present when the program froze, the song that actually plays is one of the songs that I input into the virtual folder. No matter what I do I can't unfreeze the program. I instead have to close the program and restart it again. 4) Also, when I click on the other tabs, effects etc.... they display but the frozen search results also continue to display in the center window. 5) I read through your forum and followed the link to the suggested soundcard driver for my maya so I don't think that is the issue. My soundcard plays fine and all my media play flawlessly until I start creating song lists with virtual folders. Then it's just been a nightmare. Please somebody help!!!!!

Hi Kente,

It's a shame you're having problems, I use Virtual Folders myself and haven't had any trouble. I've been on the forums here for well over a year now and I can't remember anybody else reporting this.

Hopefully that means that it's just a little problem and you can easily sort it!

This is just standard advice that can often help with lot of different stuff:

Have you got the latest version of DirectX? The latest is 9c, but there was an update in April so it's worth getting that.

Also, I can't imagine that it's a performance issue because it sounds like you've goto a powful enough computer, but maybe you could try disabling some windows services that you don't need (anything to do with networking is a good place to start).

If you fancy some more time to try and get it working, you can go to www.numark.com and download the trial of "CUE"- it's just Virtual DJ that's been branded by Numark. Again you get a 20 day trial i think.

Good luck getting your problems sorted.

I use a DAC-3 with VDJ myself, there's a customised mapper that you can download if you buy the full version, it's got loads more features and it rocks!

Also, just for another thing to try, make sure you turn off all the fancy graphics stuff in Vista like the Sidebar and the "Aero" interface thingy.

I know it's not amazing advice or anything, but you can never tell what might be affecting something else on computers!

I had the same problem. It was an IRQ conflict between my graphics card and usb mouse i was using.

The screen would just lock up and freeze.

Solution was (with some help from Sky & Rune) to uninstall all mouse driver and reinstall on a different, non conflicting usb port.

Gary.

Try disabling the WIFI on the machine. Also change the perfprmance settings in Vista.

Thank you all for getting back to me! I fulling intended on trying some of your trouble shooting suggestions but unfortunately my Virtual DJ trial has runout. I downloaded the trial of Cue but since it is the same product, it recognized the other trial and also closes every two minutes.... hardly enough time to do any troubleshooting. I emailed the company directly "twice" over a week ago 1) requesting help with getting a password when I set-up a profile in this forum and it was never emailed back to me 2) requesting their 4 day extention on the trial and explaining my problem, but still haven't gotten any response from either email.
I'd purchase the software on your recommendations and hope for the best except for the fact that they've ignored both my emails and in my experience that's never a good sign. You'd think they'd try to help solve problems so potential customers would purchase their products. I don't know if any company emplyees monitor this forum, but it would be nice if one of them would contact me and help me solve my problem so I can purchase their product and get started in your community!
I'm a public school music teacher/Chorale Director here in New York State, US and I've been DJing for many years, but during the week I have NO TIME to do anything but service my 200+ students... especially as this school year comes to a close. Add to that one type of gig or another on most weekends and you can see how a trial loaded onto a brand new laptop using a brand new operating system could runout in 20 consecutive days. If it were a '20 time use trial' then I probably wouldn't be having this probem. All I can do is hope that someone will contact me so I can solve this problem before I end up researching an alternative software program that meets my needs. Any help in resolving this matter from anyone would be extremely appreciated. Thanks!

Yes, First I talked to Jeeves, your automated search assistant. Then I sent an e-mail as I just did again.

I just checked the latest e-mail I sent to Atomix on Sunday, May 20th using DJcel's "contact" link asking for help in solving my virtual folder problem. After I sent the other two e-mails, an automatic response was issued that said someone would respond within a week. (It's been two weeks now and still nothing.) This e-mail generated a ticket which I thought was a good sign because I could track it at the website. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to have made any difference. I just checked today Thurday, May 24th and it still hasn't even been read. Is this normal?

kente,
I've had my VDJ since last november and have had the same problems...freezing when dragging into the virtual folders, having someone answer my help tickets along with crashing at least twice a week. I do 3-4 4 hour shows a week. Now, I can't even use vdj. Whenever the program is running, it won't let me access the 'Start' key on my computer. It just flashes and if I'm playing anything, the screen also flashes. So, I can't run any other programs at the same time, like wordpad (to keep singers rotations) or any simple program I use to search through my DVD collection. I've had to resort to using my older program, Tricerasoft Swift Elite which isn't as good as VDJ, but gets the job done. I've written email (help tickets) after email, and only once has anyone really tried to help me, and that was when they did the help desk, went into my computer and tweeked it up. Still, I have the same problems. My computer, like yours is way above the recommended requirements with the latest codecs and drivers installed.

ronnieskar,

What operating system are you using? Hasn't anyone in the forum here has been able to help you solve the Virtual Folder crashing problem? Doesn't the Tricerasoft Swift Elite program require a hardware dongle? I want to stay away from one if possible. I've had bad experiences with other programs I've bought in the past that required a dongle.

I just checked my ticket again and it still hasn't been read!

I'm willing to try to solve this problem and hopefully buy VDJ because it supports my DAC-3, (even with poor company support) so long as there are people in the community willing to help. I just can't do anything right now because my trial has run out.

I'm using WIN XP. Yep, Swift Elite uses the tongle, I hate it too and I've had problems with tricerasoft also.
I'm beginning to believe that there really isn't anyone who works for VDJ. It seems like everyone who has asked me questions or gave me any help are professional DJ's who have been using the product for awhile. When I do my show I really press the program because I mix Karaoke with video and MP3's. I use visualizations with the instrumentals in Karaoke songs. I also do sports shows where I use a combination of video clips with pics in a slide show. I've had crashing problems when dropping MP3+G's into a player while playing another MP3+G or MP3. Also, had visualizations crash the program while playing a MP3 or MP3+G. Never have I had the program crash while using videos. I've paid $300 for VDJ and 300 for Swift Elite and I still haven't found a program that handle the shows I have without problems. At least with Tricerasoft, I got people who answered my emails and actually made changes in the program to problems I was having.

With VDJ, it would just be nice to actually have some real support . I had a computer programmer friend of mine look at it and he said he thought the program had memory leaks. Don't know if that's true, just know it would be nice to have someone at Virtual DJ who has clue to what the program consists of to contact me and try to eliminate these problems.

Good luck! If you find something else, similar to VDJ, let me know.
