So i've seen this new option in the sound set up menu in V5r7.
I've read the instruction manual and can understand that there is a new Asio engine option you can use if you wish (apparently its safer)
What I can't understand is if the manual is wrong, or if the program makers have started to make things complicated.
Normally, if i wanted a feature, like to use the new Asio engine, i would put a tick in the box next to it. The manual says to remove the tick to use the new Asio engine.
Is there a mistake in the manual, or have the makers broke with tradition and changed things here. I've just had a look at all the other tick box options and they are all for adding a feature, not removing one.
Can someone clarify this for me? It would be nice if the tick boxes had some kind or uniform action.
Gary

The previous ASIO engine was already optimised for very low latency (renamed ultra-latency) but as some computers have problems with this optimization, a new ASIO engine was developped, less optimised but safer.
In clear it's correct

To clarify the manual's text (even though Dj-in-Norway is correct) maybe it could have been written as such -
"Ultra-latency ASIO – There are two ASIO engines available for VirtualDJ to provide better latency support. Checked is the original ASIO engine that is optimised for very low latency (renamed ultra-latency) and is still considered the default engine. Some computers have problems with this optimization. Unchecked is the NEW 'safer' performance level ASIO engine which has less optimization for environments that have difficulty with the Ultra-Latency engine."
And, thank you for taking the time to read the manual.

I noticed this while reading through the updated manual, too. Thanks for clarifying everything. It is much easier to understand now, and I'm sort of glad it came up :)

Does this new ASIO driver gain us anything? I am running a MAYA 44 USB with the timecode CD's. I want to know if I should use it or the current one? WIl there e less latency? will I see any difference?

With the MAYA 44 USB I would stay with the Original ASIO engine (checked)

Call me crazy, but doesn't "Ultra-Latency" imply a very high latency? Should that not read "Ultra-Low Latency?"

This is making a little more sense now. I havn't actually read up on this new mode (thought testing was better than anything). I have had some problems with this mode myself. Seems to glitch up after a while if for example somthing major alters state of program i.e. loading new video or even activating sometime. The sound kinda crunches up and crackles and the vinyl control becomes near un-responsive.
I also think the latency is higher with this on than off. I get far better results scratching with safemode on and this mode off (dont think it shows up when safe mode is on).

ian, i think thats the point. the new engine is for machines that are not capable of low latency.
i think the part missing is the knowledge that windows is not a real-time application capable operating system. everything is in threads, so essentially you can emulate a real time application if your computer has nothing better to do. it manages many things at once by 'threading' (kinda like multitasking). low latency computers can take advantage of more 'optimized code' which likely does alot less work to make sure it can do things with priority.
for instance, you have a secretary that is completly useless. so the result is you micromanage them to ensure everything gets done. this is opposed to a super-secretary (ehem, personal assistant) which is simply awesome. you just give them a list each morning and at the end of the day it's all done plus extra. the new engine is the useless secretary, the old engine is the super one. less micromanaging all-round.
hopefully the analogy is correct and understandable, otherwise i submit to the 'real word' from one of the teamers.

hello people..i dont know if this has to do with the ultra latency (that i had checked)...but SOMEtimes...without touching anything...as a song plays...it starts going crazy(like the pitch is at fast)..but the pitch hasnt moved at all...why is that happening?

Why have you dug up a thread from 2008, instead of posting a new message?
Anyway - what version (number and name) of VDJ are you experiencing this with?
Is this happening with a controller connected, or without?

It sounds like you have inadvertently touched a hot key on your keyboard.

I'm using an American Audio 14 MXR mixer and using Virtual Dj that came with the mixer. This program is custom mapped for the 14 MXR. The only problem that I am having is when I try to make settings on CONFIG. Once I make the following settings, INPUT: NONE OUTPUT: EXTERNAL MIXER and SOUND CARD: ASIO then press the Apply and Ok the window closes, but the setting go back to NONE, SINGLE OUTPUT and Simple. "IS THERE SOMETHING I AM MISSING, I WANT TO HAVE THESE SETTINGS STAY IN EFFECT". I DON'T SEE ANYWHERE ON THE PROGRAM TO "SAVE" THE SETTINGS.
Apreciate any help.......Thank You

You hijacked a topic with a completely unrelated question. Next time use the pen and pencil icon at the top of the page to ask your own question.
But make sure your user profile has full rights to VDJ. Preferably use an administrative account. See if that helps any.

As above, this is an old topic from 2011 for a very old and out-of-date version of the software and is no-longer relevant to the current version (v7.4)
