Recently I've been using a hardware controller (The MixMeister Control from Numark) and I've got it all mapped out so that between this and my mixer, I almost NEVER have to touch the computer, except to search.
Now the problem I have is this:
When I search, I set Ctrl+S to bring focus to the search field so that I can enter in a search. That works fine. When I want to clear the search field, however, I can't really find a way to do it that works well, other than clicking at it with the mouse. (Pressing backspace over and over takes quite a while because VDJ researches again with every keystroke that is entered.) It would save me time if I could just clear it with a keystroke, however. As far as I can see, there is no VDJScript command to clear the search field, so i can't just map it to a key.
In most windows applications, Ctrl+Backspace will delete everything behind the backspace key. This would be a really handy function to have in VirtualDJ - or at least if there were a VDJScript command that could be mapped to that combination, that would work well, also.
As it is now, I can hit CTRL+S, type in my search, use the "Browser knob" to select a track, and push the knob to load it into my playlist. I can then use the "Preview" knob to switch the browser pane, and then scroll to the track with the Browser knob and then push the Preview knob to load it into the deck that's not currently playing.
This all works great, and I never have to touch the mouse, so it speeds me up a lot! The only missing piece is the ability to clear the search field.

Just a thought if you haven't tried it yet. Press CTRL + A to highlight the text (Command + A if you're on a Mac) and then hit backspace or delete to clear it. Hope that helps.

Good idea, but nope: that shortcut doesn't work in VirtualDJ. What it does do is inserts some special character (a tab, perhaps?)

Have you tried assigning a key to search '' & search (that's 2 single quotes, not a double quote!).

Interesting idea. This partially works, when the focus is NOT on the search field, it does clear the field and put the cursor in the box.
However, when the cursor is already in the search box, it doesn't clear it - it just adds two exclamation marks !! after what is already in there. It almost looks like a bug of some sort.

it would be good to have search box "clear" when we press SEARCH shortcut -
You can also do a shortcut to clear : search ' ' - BUT I have problems with this thing ...after to do this I have some problems to search songs -
for Ex . I type david .. I clear searchbox with shortcut , then I type again davi & I have no names in the recordcase ...if i type David i have no problems .

Very strange....works for me regardless of where the focus is, or whether the search box is empty or not!

I see that you are Italian, and I presume that you have your language settings set to Italian input... I wonder if that has a bearing on why this might work differently from you.
I'm not sure why for me, when I enter CTRL shortcuts, it adds non-printable characters and other weird things into the field.

It works pretty well also at the US side ;-)
I don't know the english word for this letter, but if you press two times the following button, it should work.

This keyboard shortcut works fine, when you are inside the browser and you want to jump into the searchbar.
Hit the button and you are in the searchbar!
After you are typing your search words into the searchbar, the results came up.
You can't delete the search words at this time, by hit the button again!
To clear the searchbar with this shortcut, you must move inside the search result.
When you hit now the button, you jump back into the searchbar and clean it.
Hope it helps!

+1
Same problem with german layout. When the focus is in the search field the hotkey prints a non readable character.
When focus is outside everything is ok.

Thanks Haui70, but this doesn't get me any further.
Because of the way the controller works, the focus never actually does leave the search field, even after I scroll through and enter the tracks (with the mouse, it would, however)... The problem seems to be that the search field intercepts the search and clear search field commands and interprets them as some kind of special characters.

That's an Irish flag ;-). Hard to distinguish the difference between the Irish (Green/White/Orange) and Italian (Green/White/Red) flags...

D'oh! Oops, yeah, it's a pretty subtle distintion. I see in the image properties that it is called "ie.gif" which obviously isn't short for Italy.

Try this instead .... search """ & search 2 double quotes.
I think it's working

Nope. Still does the same thing - puts a special character (it looks like two !! exclamation marks) in the field.
It only works if the search field doesn't have the focus.

Which keyboard key (button) are you trying to assign this command?
Ctr+S does this strange thing as you mentioned. But if you try a single key (not a combination it works fine)

I was using Shift+Ctrl+S.
Does this make a difference? What were you using?

Ah... I assigned it to "Enter" and it seems to work okay, but I have to press it twice to clear the field. (Still way easier than using backspace!)
Interesting that the whole time I've used VirtualDJ, I've never assigned Enter to anything... and it's not used for anything either, afaik.
This should provide a workable solution. Thanks djdad!
