Hi, Recently changed mixers, instead of a cheap Gemini with a built in EQ Im using a Numark DXM -09 and I aquired a used PV Stasis Q231 EQ (2 channell)- my problem is from left to right is 31 range selectors, all set of the middle. adjusting it by ear made 2 of my friends complain that it sounded too "shrill, treb-ally" then "waaaay too much bass dude", the built in EQ to my old Gemni was simplistic and had like 10 range selectors... My question is: Is there a noob EQ setting for these professional EQ's? Or is the elitist-pro thing to do is to adjust it yourself by ear?

yup.. thats pretty much it.. anything else and your actually ruining the sound and not helping it.. (signs of this is EQ's with pretty smily faces, V's, W's, or sine waves..)

The purpose of the EQ is to compensate for speaker hot spots (no speaker is a flatline), room acoustics, and feedback issues, etc etc

HOW TO SET UP AN EQ:

1.) download the frequency graph for your speakers.. (note: if your speakers dont have a frequency graph.. stop using the EQ. )
2.) using the frequency graph you can now slightly adjust the curve to help compensate (IE: make the speakers more flatline)
3.) adjust the highs to remove any problem hiss.
4.) adjust the bottom end to help with room problems (cement floor, large room, hard walls (slapback), etc)
5.) use your mic, bring the vokume up to just below feedback.. use the EQ to slightly take out problem frequencies
6.) train your ear.. buy an expensive set of headphones.. in most cases, using a CD, that great sound you hear from the headphones is what you want to get as close to in a live PA system.. (not possible of course, but we try)
7.) give up being an elitist and stop using the EQ..
I gave this up years ago... being a mobile DJ would mean spending way too much time playing with an equalizer each weekend, WHEN MOST PEOPLE DONT CARE.
8.) make lots of money and buy a DBX driverack processor (which does everything for you automatically)

talked to a guy today on another forum that said I dont need a EQ with my current gear (Numark dxm-09, PV2600, (2) Numark CDX, (2) B2 1100w)
Should I consider this?

are you mobile or stationary (IE playing all the time from a bar or home, or doing gigs in different venues)

what do you have for speakers?

Hi mate.

as Hippydog has already stated. An eq like the one you are using is realy more usefull in live music situations where you need to have fine control over the system frequency response. They take a fair amount of time to set up properly and can wreck the sound if used in the wrong way, I use several of these eq's for feedback control in stage monitors but use a digital unit (similar io the DBX drive rack) for my Front of house sound. Having so many frequency bands to adjust is great for setting up a PA rig but is realy overkill when used with all but the most complex DJ rig. 3 or 4 band eq on the mixer channels is usualy of far more use.

I'm doing 90 % Bars/Clubs 10% weddings, high school dances, private parties.... (weekend warrior) The speakers I'm currently using are B52's 1100w (2) (bout 5ft tall cabnet) and dual Pyle 300w nothings on tri-pod stands. ( so mobile)

I'm assuming in the bars/clubs they already have their own system, so the EQ would be useless? and the small 10% of mobile probably isnt worth lugging it around and setting it up everytime..

If one of the bars that you frequent doesnt have ANY type of EQ or processor, you might consider using it there for practice..

I don't want to discourage you from EVER using your EQ, Its an important skill to learn and you should take some time to learn it..
