I was recently asked how much extra I would charge for lighting at a wedding coming up in August. Well, that was the easy part, however, I have never done a wedding using lighting and it has never been requested or required. This one will want lighting.
So, I was wondering from you guys that do a bit of lighting what type of stuff you feel I would need to set up at a wedding in a small Legion hall with about 100 people? I already have two Vertigo's on a tree. I'm thinking that's not a real lot, although it has been sufficient in small venue's I have played for. What else as a minimum should I obtain so as to avoid the question "Gee, I thought you were gonna bring some lighting"? What do I really need for a small wedding in a small legion hall?

I already have two older Vertgo's, would I need two more (total of four) or should I get something else to supplement the two vertigo's I already have?
Any more suggestions.
Thanx

While I would love to sell you some of my non-LED lights, I won't do that to someone asking for help.
In my experience I have found that mushroom style lights seem to give the room a better "party feel" than lights that only point at one location. American DJ & Chauvet will probably give you the most bang for your buck. Some people don't like the sound activated lights but they work great in most circumstances.
Unfortunately only you can determine when you have enough lights. I've seen some mobile DJs that would make a 70s nightclub jealous and still want more lights and other DJs show up with 4 par cans and are happy with the results.
Here's one more piece of advice. Most of your older (non-LED) lights have a duty cycle. This means that they can only stay on for a short time (usually 20 mins) before they need to be turned off for the cool down cycle. LED lights to have this problem. The reason I mention this is that if your lights have a duty cycle, this will come into play when determining the number of lights needed. I always like to have at least one light on.

What!
Duty Cycle, Really!! if my lights couldn't do the whole disco then I'd chuck em out.
Absolute rubbish, just keep using em till the bulbs blow n then replace em. Fan keeps the cool enough during performances..

Lighting a wedding can sometimes be tricky due to limited ceiling heights. Weddings often feature grand parents who may find certain types of lighting annoying. You should take special care to be sure regular dance lights (like the Vertigo) are NOT shinning directly into people's EYEBALLS. (*)-(*)
I would never play a wedding without a mirror ball, may be old fashioned for some venues but not for a wedding. I use these which simulate the mirror ball effect without the hassle of using a ball and pinspots. This effect gives the room a mild effect without being overbearing.
Your post says you want to ADD to what you have not replace them so this is my suggestion.
$42.50 (Star-Ray Led)

Charlie TOTALLY disagree, if you run the older lights with a duty cycle CONSTANTLY you will end up replacing the bulbs more often, as well as the bulb sockets. The wires over time will become brittle and the rubber coating on the wires will degrade and you will be more likely to develop a short when they run against the metal enclosure. It's all about the HEAT :-)

Aright Bryan, what you need is some LEDs. LEDs are better than bulbs lights(the older lights, those you have). And they also have better lighting quality. For a buck, I would recommend you with confidence and no doubts, American DJ Led lighting. Forget the mushroms. Go for two American DJ Dual Gem Pulse which are LED.
So this is what I would go with: 1x ADJ Dual Gem Pulse+ 2x ADJ Tri Gem Led.
Take care.

For a wedding, I find uplighting to be superior to dance floor lights. Mostly because of what someone noted earlier. There are a lot of grandparents who may not take kindly nor care for fast moving and strobing lights.
I'm at work right now and can not get to youtube, but look up youtube user "briansredd" to find some good guides to wedding DJ lighting.

Well you lot must be really old! i.e. using gear way before my time or you must be using gear that isn't up to it or it must be a US thing because we don't believe in it in the UK were out every weekend without problems.

agreed. any american dj led stuff is good. imo, get the revo 3 or 2, best value out there.

Wash before effects. get two wash effects, LED or other. Get two of the starballs, for slow songs. Put it all on the T stand. Get a cheap controller. Have a party.

Think I might take your advice and add that star ray thing that Renee spoke of. Instead of getting TWO of the smaller tri gems, how about one of them and maybe one of a similar type just to get two different effects? Then what might you suggest for another similar effect (just to add some variety)
So Far I am at 1 x Star Ray (Renee suggested) plus 1 x ADJ Dual Gem Pulse plus 1 x ADJ Tri-Gem plus one thing similar to a tri Gem (what might that be???)???

Renee, who makes that mirrorball effect? I can only find one by ADJ for $100. I'm obviously not as resourceful as you.
: )
Thanks Doll.

It can be purchased by a company based in Texas. I've been a customer for about 10 years and I have never had a problem with them. If they have what you want their prices are usually hard to beat. "Cheap Lights" is the name, so they had better be cheap! :-)

Last year when i went to international DJ Expo in AC. I bought two of these. They are the American DJ TRI LED's. My next light is going to be the Chauvet Derby X.
geposted Tue 30 Mar 10 @ 6:49 pm
Well, I hope you turn them off for 10 mins every half hour to cool down! because if you don't they'll overheat ;)

The tri LED's look pretty cool think I'll pick up a couple to "replace" my Vertigo's. Actually had the vertigo's ten years ago but rarely use them.
A few wedding clients have been asking me about lighting lately, and I knew I was getting antiquated (NOT ancient). And yes, I have always cycled the vertigos (actually it is one vertigo and one avenger) that's why I have rarely replaced bulbs (which were around 20 bucks back in the day (although a lil cheaper now). All my residencies (three) have their own lighting.
Great advice guys/girl(s). Thanx.

These lights dont heat up. They are LED rated at 50,000 hrs. No duty cycle. Here are new lights that i added to my setup. Its The Chauvet Derby X. They are rated at 100,000 hrs. I just leave them on all night and they dont heat up or consume much electricity.
