I just thought I'd share my personal practice tip for learning to key in on the "beat" when mixing.

NOTE: Do this use duplicate songs.
1) Turn your high and mid all the down for each deck.
2) Turn the low all the way up.
3) Scratch the deck around once or twice and listen for the strongest beat. This should be your bass beat.
4) Find the bass beat on your second song the same fashion. Leave cued at the beginning of the beat.
5) Play deck one.
6) Counter to 4 four times using the base beat.
7) Drop in second bass beat at 5-1 (counting in 1-1, 1-2 1-3, 1-4, 2-1, etc. fashion)
8) If it echoes, you dropped it in too early or too late. Go to the beginning of the bass beat for deck 2 and try again.
9) If you think you did it right, look at the master levels and see in the bars are the same height at the same time, if so, you did it correctly.

personally i leave the mid and trebble up and turn down the bass. i use the last beat of track one and the first beat of track two. i bring the track in low and slow so the last bass section of track one is playing along with a section of instrumental and vocal from track one.
once the last beat hits the frist beat of the next track i slam the bass back up to keep the beat going. then pull the first track.
though there are various ways i mix. somtimes i match 2 complete sections that contain a bass line so when they both finish i can slam the fader into the next track taking the previous track out immediatly.
also i sometimes wait untill a bass section on track one hits the last beat then slam the fader into a breakdown of the new track.
as for practicing, i just grab some tunes and start mixing. sometimes i completely balls it up but its easier to learn for me that way because it forces me to think fast to fix it. if i cant fix it i just rewind the track a few bars and try again.

Yeah, it all depends on the tone of the track, but you can do this with any of the levels.

There is an entire thread dedicated to learning/teaching how to mix. Please post any more information here ---> http://www.virtualdj.com/forums/6288/Mix_lessons/DJ_MIXING___basic_-_advanced_-_pro.html
