I have about 12.000 Songs and those are the only files on my laptop. Does 12.000 songs really take up 227GB!? I don't have any pictures, videos, games, or anything I would expect to take up that much. I do have Google SketchUp Denon Dj Asio and their music manager which I dont use, Norton, and RealPlayer.

my guesstimate is 40 to 80 gb tops

why don't you right click the folder with the music and then click "properties"?

Try and find out how many instances you have for each song and where they are located, sounds like you have multiple copies of each track at that file size.

I have some folders on my desktop and then others in my main music thing and the music was 22GB without the ones on the desktop which max I'm guessing will be thirty something GB. How do I get all my files in order without copies? Oh and thanks guys!

uhhhh .....

usually i have to be speaking "American" to Tayla's English to be this confused ....

you have music on your desktop in folders

you have a "main music thing"????? with music in it ....correct ?

you want to know how much space the music is using on your C: ??

is that correct ?

so that if you add those 2 numbers together , you know how many trax u have and

how much space they require ?

the folders on the desktop is a mistake BTW .....you should move them elsewhere

your computer already spends a lot of it's time making your desktop and you are making it's workload

un-necessarily worse

right click like i said to get the # of files and the size of the folders

click on the Browser tab in the software ......

from what you said it sounds like approximately 52 gb ?

right click on the desktop folders and copy and paste them into your "main music thing"

now all music is in one place

your C: is capable of failing on you at any moment without notice , so get an inexpensive external hard drive to back up to

the items that you don't use seem like good items to get rid of ....

just click control panel / programs and features then uninstall

next run CCleaner to remove the bits left behind from the uninstall (this is found in the registry tab in CCleaner) , then defrag ......

now yer all spiffy , clean , and organized

Wow now that I read my post it's some really messed up stuff. Well basically I was organizing my music into folders according to genre so that is why i have music folders all over the place instead of having everything in the "Music" folder. So basically put everything into the Music folder and do the clean up?

If all your files are accessible through VDJ, then you should really move your desk top music folder content into your music folder like... Chuck said, but only by using the move command within VDJ, this will insure that all files will remain logged and accessible in the main database and all your links and cue points are saved to the new location.

Then you could sort by title and artist to weed out all the dup's you have and clean up your library....

Good Luck,

Joey....

22gb sounds more right than your original 227gb, no wonder we're confused chuck...

If you are just trying to figure out why your Hard drive is showing 227GB used check your back up copies. Particularly if you are using windows Vista it can run rampant with extra copies.

Take the following steps.

My computer -> C: right click -> properties -> disk cleanup -> more options -> System restore and shadow copies -> clean up

delete all but the most recent restore point and run then run a standard disk clean up followed by a defragmenting. That should cleanup any misc files and restore points that are taking up excess hard drive space.

This should be repeated at least once a month.

chuck mate i have my music folders on desktop in folders.are you telling me if i move them to say my documents my lappy will be more responsive and cpu in vdj might drop.
just asking as i never heard this before what you said

I'm not chuck but I will give your ? a shot staffy

Most OS try to store anything on the desktop in cache or a page file in order to lessen the response time when accessing those files. However if the desktop has a lot of folders or data it will will not fit in a standard RAM cache file and create a swap or page file on the hard drive and attempt to index all the files accessed by the desktop.

By storing your music files on your desktop you significantly increase the overhead of the file system. In most situations you would only notice this by increased load times on boot up unless your system is underpowered or stressed by program usage to begin with.

Keeping a clean and streamlined desktop with fewer links and file folders is always best but a balancing act between accessibility and resources.

In short keep you collection in a folder that isn't directly accessed by the desktop for best performance

you get a raise .....tell 'em Chuck said it was all right .......

Joey made an excellent point about moving files properly

if you move files your virtual folders for instance could lose track of those files because of

the new location

ever since (hideous) Vista i have used UWT ultimate windows tweaker (used to be power toys)

to add handy items to my context boxes , such as copy to and move to , so i have that in windows

not just in VDJ
