I use an external HDD for my music and karaoke files, and recently purchased a Mac Book Pro (Quad Core i7).
I was using VDJ tonight and the whole database just dropped on me, I browsed to folders from within VDJ and everything was blank. So after that I used finder to search for the songs and when I tried to drag and drop from finder onto the deck in VDJ, nothing happened (it wouldn't load the deck).
I have since removed the whole database and tried to start a fresh scan but every time I get going it stops and comes up with these blanks again.
Has anyone else experienced this and if so... managed to fix it?

You should always keep a backup copy of each database XML in case of failure or corruption

I do, I have them backed up on several HDDs.
The files and databases work fine on my Windows 7 laptop... But on my MBP, it is a completely different story.
I can go down a list of folders within VDJ and eventually no songs will show up, I can then go back up the list of folders that previously showed contents, and there will be nothing in there. It's a really strange issue...

If you are browsing folders that contain zipped karaoke files, make sure that they do not contain too many files in the same folder, otherwise you may experience problems with them not displaying, due to the zip decoder in MacOS.
Most KJ's usually organise their collection by disk number (E.g: /Karaoke/Sunfly/SF123, /Karaoke/Sunfly/SF124, etc.) so this is not usually a problem.
NOTE: With today's large hard drives, zipping is not really necessary.

Thanks for the response, I'll go through and unzip the files (they are sorted into separate disc folders so there are never more than 25 or so in any folder).
