I have a brand new Macbook pro but screwed up when ordering and my hard drive cannot handle all of my music. Does an external hard drive work fine?
Do you set up iTunes to see the library on the external?

An external HD will work fine. It is best to have iTunes on the external if you have limited space on the MacBook.

An externally powered HD is optimal, but USB powered will work fine.

I use a 4 terrabyte external HD filled with music videos and audio tracks and it works perfectly! I keep my VJ database on it too. I have 2 6TB drives that I use as backups to make sure I always have exact duplicates of everything (cant risk losing the years and years worth of stuff I've collected).

You can use either- I use USB!

While you're at it, look into Good Sync for hard drive Sync/backups if you're going to be using/backing up your library to multiple HD's. Free limited trial and super affordable after the trial runs out.

On a side note- VDJ handles multiple HDs awesome!
