Hi guys, I'm relatively new to DJ'ing. My set up is as follows;
EV SX 300 speakers
Dynacord Powermate 1000 mark 3 mixer
Numark DJi02 external sound card
Numark Total Controller
Mac Mini
VDJ 8
I enjoy doing karaoke but want to get more into doing weddings etc, but still do karaoke too. I love my sound set up with the speakers, mixer and sound card. However, when I plug in my controller it suppresses the sound. The controller incidentally was recommended my a friend and I can't also set cue points with the controller.
I would like to know please first of all whether anyone knows why the controller should suppress the sound? But also any advice on what to buy should I change the controller?
I'm also curious as to whether the sound card in a more expensive controller would be better?
Many thanks in advance.

I've never had a Numark Total Control, so I can't help you with you sound issue
Today almost all controllers come with a soundcard, and from the well known companies like Denon, Pioneer, Numark, NI, Reloop and so on, they all sound pretty good, even in their cheap models. So the simplest setup is probably to get a controller with a soundcard and keep your current one for backup
Regarding which controller to get it's all about preferences. They are all great compared to what was available 5 years ago
I you don't want to spend too much money an good place to start may be:
- Pioneer DDJ-SB2 or Pioneer DDJ-RB - I recommend the SB2, because they have minimized the no of buttons on the RB
- Reloop Beatmix 2 or Beatmix 4 (2 or 4 channels - the mk2 versions should just be in other colors)
- Numark Mixtrack Pro III
...but other users will suggest other entry level controllers, and as I said these days they are all pretty good unless you find some obscure toy

Thanks for the reply. A friend of mine asked the question. Do I need one!
I guess if I bought a controller with a sound card I would have to use it or would vdj give you the option?

Yes, you can combine it anyway you want. I sometimes use an external soundcard with a controller that also has a sound card which is then not in use
Normally you choose one of the sound cards that is attached and available in the sound setup. That can be an externe soundcard, one that's included in a controller or the one in the laptop (you can also combine them, but often you just need the one), and then you use all the controllers that are attached to the laptop at the same time. So you can have one controller controlling deck 1 and 2, another controller controlling deck 3 and 4, and yet another controller, like a launchpad, controlling all your samples. On top of that you can still use your keyboard mapping
