Hi all,
this might sound a little blasphemic, but I would like to express how happy I am with VDJ, no other DJ software suits my needs and is customizable to this degree. It is stable, I never had any issues for the last 2 years, even using "early" builds. Just great.
But.... the name is really lame. To me the name "Virtual DJ" sounds like a leftover from the 90's. In addition, I and what I do feels very real, not virtual at all...
VDJ is modern, superior and far ahead of competitors, so it deserves a name that expresses that.
Thats my 2 cents...

Well there's not been a thread about the name for at least a week now.....
There are many products with crappy names but with millions of users the brand is too important.
If Stephane was going to change the name he would have done it by now.

Agreed. There are worse out there.
I mean Traktor - sounds like a piece of farm machinery. As for Serato, well they really went to town. DJ - how did they come up with that one?
Dex, Mixxx, Rekordbox DJ........ not exactly innovative are they?

Names are always a matter of taste. And yes there are other bad names out there. But I personally think "Traktor" is a great name choice.
I can imagine that with a new, more attractive name also the selling numbers would increase. And as I said, what is "virtual" about our job? It's very real to me.
I just think VDJ deserves a better name,

It goes back to 2003 when there were "virtually" no DJ programs for your PC. Only other ones I remember were PCDJ red, BPM Studio and AtomixMP3

Personally I really couldn't care less what the software is called, as long as it does what I want.
The customers certainly don't care. Not once have I been asked what software I use, or even if I DJ from a laptop. All they care about is can you play the music they want.

Oh thats very different for me. Especially colleagues often ask me which program I use. I often feel a bit silly to tell them "Virtual DJ".

If so, show your skills and mix'em through the wall...

I'm the opposite. They now I'm a programmer, so I tell them "Virtual DJ because of the scripting options - it's the one with the most possibilities for techies".
Then they often want to learn more, because they often use a "toaster" software, that does what it says on the box and nothing more

......and I used one from 1998 called Virtual TurnTables or VTT for short. Written by a Chinese student at Texas University for his Thesis AFAIK. Written for Windows 95 & 98, didn't work on Windows XP in 2002 and he had stopped supporting it by then, that's when I got PCDJ Blue & Red with the Numark DMC-01 Controller.

I remember pcdj, I could never quite get used to its gui so went with atomix MP3. Low and behold here I am today still using it lol
I have noticed myself however that somethimes when mentioning vdj, some people look at you like "dude! Do you even mix?" But imo there is no other better software.
I think its the word "virtual" that to some make it appear a lesser rival to others.
However although with all things in life, there is, by opinion, room for improvement. It still stands that, if it aint broken, don't try to fix it!
If vdj was to change its name it would be stupid to change it completely, the vdj brand is what is known and loved by a huge audience, so the change of the word virtual to another "v" word would imo be the only way forward.
Vortex DJ for example because the software draws you in and never lets go.
Or Vengeance DJ, because its the best software over all and despite what others say it's still going from strength to strength over its rivals.
Vdj despite not being taken seriously sometimes, is a well known brand and has been built on "virtual DJ", so why change it?

For future reference... stick a bit of this on your screen, get a pen and call it what you want.... problem solved!

This is how I feel. I still don't know what a Serato is, but I would not ask them to change their name either The last time one of the other DJs at my club said something about my software, I pointed out that I have 3 shifts and he has 1, and if I wanted his shift I could have that also. The name of the software or equipment that I use has nothing to do with my skills. I doubt the owner would change the name because ten guys don't like it. I also think it's disrespectful, because I'm sure he took some time to think up what he wanted his software to be called. It's like telling someone you don't like their kids name. So, if the software makes you happy as you say, be proud of it and worry about your next mix, which is far more important.

I edited my skin and now it's called "Real DJ" so problem solved :).

It shouldn't be to hard to implement a "custom logo" setting so you can upload your own logo instead of VDJs logo, so maybe that's an idea for a next build. Personally, I don't really care, even though I regularly get comments like "I have the same software at home". But only changing the logo won't stop those comments, people will still recognize it. You would have to use a completely different skin.
geposted Mon 08 May 17 @ 6:07 am
Using a custom logo instead of VDJ-Logo is not possible.
You can shrink the VDJ-Logo, but if it is too small, the skin won't work.

It takes a certain kind of branding disaster to have DJs trying to conceal the software they're using lol.

Name is miniscule what matters is performance of the software and the skill of the user. This will attract the desire of those listening to wanting to use this software also.

why write on it at all? just call yourself dj ducktape and wrap everything in it. it will allow personal customisation of all equipment with a zero budget lol.

I just Googled it. It seems there are actually DJs out there calling themselves DJ Duct Tape.
Must be VDJ users :-)
