Once a month I play with another DJ using a nexus rig (CDJ2000 and DJM900), he uses Traktor in timecode mode and I use VDJ in HID, and also using the sound device of the DJM900.
Once the other DJ starts his set, I shut VDJ down and unplug all the USB connections (because there's only one spot for a laptop).
When I come back and reconnect the USB devices, the DJM900 soundcard is recognised and works right away. Now sometimes during this switchover, it's not practical to connect the CDJs as at least one is still in use, at this point I want to navigate through the browser and locate potential track candidates, load to the decks and maybe even mix internally (until the other guy is out the way), none of this is possible though, because until the CDJs are connected the software comes to a crawl, I can barely scroll through tracks, and loading a track is impossible, for a moment it's as if my i7 12gb Asus has turned into a 486, sometimes the software my hang and fade (windows showing that it's become unresponsive), then the moment I'm able to connect the CDJs (just one) the software comes 'alive' again, and works as it should.
This isn't a one off, it's happened on 3 events and is quite worrying as well as restricting when firmly in the preparation phase.

At this time the mixer is already connected? Also to be clear, the sound setup only has the djm, not the cdj's right?

Correct on both accounts.
