Hi,
I'm planning to buy a laptop to run VDJ on.
The newest Intel cpu in the "Pentium-M Centrino". This is not the same as the P4-mobile, by the way.
Does anyone have experience with running VDJ on a Centrino-powered notebook/laptop?
If so, what clock-speed (1.x GHz) do you use?
And: what brand/type of laptop is it?
Thanks in advance,
arie

Answering my own post ....
Now that I have bought a laptop with a Pentium Centrino 1.6 GHz cpu, I must say that it works really well.
I use an Echo Indigo DJ cardbus sound card with 2 outputs.
Performance is fast and stable.

please check after hours of mixing as centrino technology has for method to decrease CPU speed to maintain the temperature as low as possible

how much did you pay for the setup?
I am looking at setting up on a pc with a small case and flat screen monitor, but a laptop will be more convenient.

I think I'd probably stay away from the centrino. My understanding is that this CPU was designed for portability. I think they prioritized things like battery life, rather than speed.
My next laptop will definately be a P-4... 2.6 or greater. With at least a gig of RAM.

I got a Laptop who works perfectly with Virtualdj.
Toshiba Tecra 9100 : P-4 M 1.7Ghz, 512Mo, 30Go, 16Mo in graphique card.
The only "problem" the temp, 70°c on mp3 total analyse :(

What effect does this have on your discos?
Would you go for a regular PC or is it a laptop everytime???
I visited your web page, your system/setup looks impressive. I dj for weddings and birthdays and am now converting to mp3s with a pc. Can't decide whether to use a laptop or a PC, the obvious reason for using a laptop is the portability, but most laptops only have a small hard disk, so I would need an external hard disk and soundcard. Your opinion/advice would be greatly appreciated.

It took almost 2 years to encode 15 years worth of DJ archives. Right now I carry them out on a 120 gig external firewire drive which I use with a Sony laptop.

I have started to encode to 256k/bits....what quality have you encoded to??
geposted Fri 23 Jan 04 @ 10:51 pm
Many are done at 128...
however, I have been slowly re-ripping my archives at 160.

I currently use a Compaq Evo 610c notebook (Pentium mobile 1,8GHz). At work we compared this laptop to a new model. This new laptop is a Compaq N6000, with a pentim centrino processor 1,4GHz.
According to Intel this laptop should be 125 to 150 percent of the Evo610.
What said the speed test. On most test items the centrino was slower! Sometimes 30 to 50 percent of the performance. Note that all other specs (Memory, harddrive, video card) are the same on both laptops.
We diceded to get some additional test tools. We continue testing on Monday. I will keep you informed.

I'm using a Toshiba Tecra S1 - Centrino 1.4Ghz... It came with 256MB of RAM, which I've since upgraded to 768MB.
I had problems with 256MB, but none since I upped the RAM.
Power-optimizing isn't a problem, as long as you keep the laptop plugged into the wall. It's come out on me before, and then everything got a lil shakey, but the music still didn't skip.
Good luck! If you have any more questions, ask me. ;)

Hi all,
nice to see an 'old' topic suddenly picking up.
Check tomshardware.com for reliable tests of centrino performance. It is usually very good, a centrino 1.6 Ghz like I have outperforms a pentium 4 2.4
The heat is not a problem, and cpu speed is more than enough to run VDJ. (laptop Acer Travelmate 803LCib)
I use a pcmcia card with dual sound-out, Echo Indigo DJ.
Today i put VDJ on auto-mix for 10 hours, it is still running OK!!
best, arie

Hellooou!
I'm soon back in the game again. My laptop quit on me totally before christmas!! It waited until my warranty had expired, just to piss me off. :)
Now I have finally ordered a new one. Jippiii!
A compaq presario x1000:
It has a 1.6Ghz centrino processor.
512mb ram
80Gb Harddrive
Graphics card with 64mb Vram
DVD-RW (great for burning mp3's)
and best of ALL:
15.4" UltraSharp WUXGA+ (1920x1200) hahaha. now I can make skins!!!
I still have my SB extigy external soundcard.
I will post here when I've tried and tested VDJ on it.
Cheers,
- Jim Nordic
Just one question...
Anybody in need of widescreen-skins?

Let us know how that Centrino holds up.
I don't know why, but I was thinking in the back of my mind that a P-4 was the only way to go for the best performance from this program. I'm very curios how you like the centrino....

Hi,
I have an Acer Pent Centrino 1.3Ghtz, 512RAM, 40gig and I it works perfectly well. Based on the MobileMark, 2002 Benchmarks, the system performance score was higher for an 1.3 g vs a 2.5 Pentium M.

DJRick, Do you use the onboard sound or an external soundcard on your laptop? I am close to purchasing a laptop and am wondering whether I should buy an external soundcard or whether I can get away with using the onboard sound. Any advice??

I use the onboard sound split. It sounds great!
good luck!
