Topic: Music Video's - A Call To Action! - Page: 2

Just a note on poor sounding videos. I find this a lot even with some of our Promo Only DVD's.

It's a fairly simple process to use SONY Vegas and replace the original sound track with a 320 bit mp3 OR the original .wav file from the music CD. My feeling is the video doesn't have to be a high quality .vob and no matter how good it looks if it sounds bad it's useless top me.

This also comes in handy if you have a video that has been edited for bad language you can replace the edited version with the explicit track. This is also helpful when you have one with a volume problem (normally too low)
This won't work for every video because some won't match but I find the majority are identical tracks.

Just thought I'd throw this in as food for thought.

As for the post I just got our P.O. "Hot Video" in last week for March and I'll be lucky if I end up using 5-6 of the whole bunch. :^(

Ditto on that.
March 07 sucks big time.
I'm pretty tired of paying for shit I won't play too.

Saved ONE track from the dance catagory which is unheard of.
It was that remix of "Wind it up - Gwen Stefani".
And WTF is with the rock category?
And they just released "Dem Jeans" which was out in November on VMS.

Has anybody heard Nelly Furtardo - Say it right? (Feb 07)
Is the bass off the hook distorted or what?
Almost hope nobody requests it.

its usually fine to reencode a mpg/vob rip. But once you start reencoding a .mp4/divx/xvid file you will really see some crappy end results. Its kind of like saving a 128 mp3 to 128 mp3 again...your going to lose even more quality.

Dunno about yahoo, but Napster might be encode @ 128, but there wmv files.......which sound better than a 128 mp3. Its sounds closer to a 192-224 mp3.

I downloaded like 10 vids from my12inch.com, I didn't come across any last night that were bad quality....I guess I was just unlucky the first time. The two tracks were "50 Cent - Best Friend" & Beyonce - Check On It" .

The worst vids I ripped from promo only that I remeber were Boyz To Men - Motownphilly & BBD - Poison. They should send a replacement for the poor sounding ones.

As some of you replied, Promo got back to me with this answer:

Hello Michael,

Thanks for your email. We appreciate your comments and feedback. I have looked in our database to see what
DVD's that you are talking about and cannot find where you have purchased any DVD's from us. However, I do see your
CD orders. Please let me know where you purchased these DVD's and exactly which format your are speaking of.
We program the newest and best releases coming out each month on one convenient DVD. I am very interested to
see what type of music you need in case you are subscribing to a disc that doesn't totally fill your needs. I am sure that
we have something that does.

I can appreciate the amount of time that it takes to rip a song off of a DVD. And, I can also appreciate you wanting the
perceived convenience that downloading an MPEG file may offer. The reality is, our licensing does not currently allow
for the retail sale of individual tracks in a downloadable format. What our licensing does allow, is for the promotional servicing
of music and music videos to DJ's and radio stations. Much like a record pool, you will receive what is currently being released
by the labels in the format of their choice. At this moment, the labels are not allowing for DVD or HD quality videos to be sold in
a downloadable format from any vendor.Albeit, offering a DVD or HD quality downloadof a video file would be a greatservice,
the labels are purely interested in protectingtheir content as much as humanly possiblewhile insuring maximum profit.

When it comes to maintaining our inventory of issues dating more than 2 years back, you are correct. We are allowing those
monthly discs to be distributed without re-ordering any more quantities from our manufacturer. Again, without knowing what
formats your are speaking of, I can only offer limited info concerning this. For each of the years that are being discontinued,
we are maintaining a library of Hot video Classics to allow for any subscriber access to a back library of the BEST videos
for each of those years.

I hope this helps to answer the some of the questions that you have raised. I am looking forward to receiving the info on your current
DVD subscriptions as I am very interested in addressing some of your concerns in more detail. Thanks again for your
feedback. Feel free to contact me directly with any comments or suggestions you may have in the future.

Kindest Regards,

I replied back with this email:

Hi Chuck,
I don't have a DVD subscription. I had purchased 2 years worth of DVD's from Promo Only in one shot. I ordered the Hot video series as well as a few of the compilation DVD's of hits like the 80's series.
I understand what the record companies are trying to do, but they have to realize that that way of distribution is quikly coming to an end and to stay profitable, they must adapt and change with the times. CD sales are way down because of the Old Napster and current sites that allow you to pay for individual downloads, Like Itunes does now. Video is the next natural progression of this trend as many more people buy video ipods and DJ's become VJ's. I have been recently looking on the peer to peer networks and everything I need as far as video's, I can download for free. Granted, they are Mpg's or Mpg4s', which is not the highest quality, and I and my fellow VJ's really want .Vob or Mpeg2 files. Also, I am one of those rare few these days who actually wants to do the right thing and pay for what I need. I can't however see spending thousands on alot of the Promo discs, to only be able to use about 30% of each disc. I DJ and VJ all types of parties (weddings, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, Corporates) and usually need the current R&B/Hip Hop, Modern Rock and Pop that is currentlky on the Billboard top 40 charts as well as classic stuff.
If you and other subscription services can put pressure on the record companies by strongly voicing these concerns, perhaps they will act a little sooner than later.

Thanks for letting me know that a Mpeg4 is about half the size of a .Vob file. Is an Mpeg4 file bigger than an mpg, mpeg or Mpeg1? I think mpg, mpeg and mpeg1 aqre all different names for the same file but if someone could clarify that would be great.
Tooi bad we can't just set something up ourselves with the record labels to legally download files trough Virtual DJ's site.

Hey Michael
I have been a Promo Only subscriber for years and I mostly deal strickly with Preacer (Tracie). I have discussion with him about having a download service in the past and basically got the same answer. That legally their license won't allow them to distribute video as a download. Unfortunately, for now I am stuck with subscribing to all major distributor to get the content on video I want. I currently get video from Promo Only, Screenplay & VMS Media.
Feel free to contact me if you need any more info or feedback

@djrenee

I find myself doing what you mentioned a LOT. So much that I've got it down to a science. It only takes me a few minutes to sync up the video and mp3. I also have some scripts to help when rendering multiple videos on one timeline. PM me and I'll get those to you. And yes Rick, the bass in Say It Right is seriously distorted. (Actually compressed might be the right term.) I usually end up playing the mp3 version over the video. (That is why I love VDJ.)

for those of you looking into my12inch.ciom, I contacted them today to ask about the quality and stats of their files and here is what they told me:
