I love my 2 Yamaha msr-400's and 1 yamaha msr800w sub, I gigged at a college graduation, 40 people, and left the sub at home. I didn't think the room was big enough to justify carrying the sub, which almost weighs 100 lbs. I have a wedding gig next week and one in May, and I will surely take the sub. I use 2 Denon DN-S3500's as backup. Comes in handy when people bring their CD request.

i encounter this all the time.....have a cd player just for the occasional cd request??? you can rip to the hd instead .....i do it all the time at the club.......i had to change the settings in my secondary ide channel to "dma if available" (not pio) and transfer mode change to "ultra dma" ...as far as i can tell after i did that was when i could play and rip simultaneously.......
for self powered speakers i reccomend mackies, jbl or ev's......i use jbl at the moment, my pa type mixing board is a mackie, i use the headphone out directly out to my phones for live previewing at mobile gigs
