the program that your using is what people call a "wave editor"
i use soundforge 8.0 (a wave editor) to cut up and edit samples or convert file type
if your looking to make music the first question is are you willing to spend money?
if yes - i reccomend going out and getting an mbox 2 pro, i myself own an mbox2, very satisfied with it........it has xlr or trs imput (mic or guitar) it comed with protools le 7.1 (this is the program that i think you would need, you can have up to 24 tracks on the mixer with individual aux imputs [for eq or compression ect] plus it is very versatile and user freindly as far as editing goes) it also comes with a bunch of demos for programs such as ableton and reason..........reason is probably the best and most popular music making software on the market, i liked it so much i went out and baught the full version and i am very happy with my purchase
if no - theres a program called fuity loops, its easy to use and probably a good place to start and i think its free to download
but anyway im intrested in hearing the music your making
