Whilst I absolutely agree it comes down to budget, it’s also a balance of investment.

I do not use ANY mechanical drives anymore. Largely because I had two fail on me in the space of 7 days a few years ago and I lost some data (managed to recover most of it).

Now of course any drive could fail and indeed SSDs only have a certain lifespan. But I would much sooner invest in a drive with no moving parts and one that can access data instantaneously without worrying about the drives power save settings.

I had this happen with two brand new drives as well. I was ahead of the game with a third backup.

As for the expensive gear and theft risk, I think the same problem exists no matter the price point of the gear. I can roll out with my mixtrack pro, 7yr old laptop, and some Mackie Thumps. I could also roll out with my DDJ-RX, a new dual ssd laptop, and my Mackie SRM-450's. Either way, if I was going to be robbed, the quality of the kit won't make a difference. It's all gear they can sell.

Odd..I have a large number of hdd, in excess of 20, plus have owned and sold a tremendous number going back in time. The reliability of these drives has been fantastic..close to 100%.
The worlds data has been safely stored on hdd.

I will have much more experience than most of you using hdd.

Viruses do attack hdd in particular the DMI?
Do you know what your doing?

Note:
most computer components are very, very reliable..industry and business would not tolerate failure. This includes cpu's, memory, hdd, and motherboards.
4 of my computers are around 10 years old and one runs Linux...all work well!

I've got 4 x 2TB SATA HDD plus many more 1TB HDD both IDE and SATA which all work well. Added to this I have many smaller drives !
You can't be serious.

Man, can you be any more condescending and insulting ?

How can you possible know the computer experience of everyone in this thread to be able to say you know more?

The two failures I had were the USB interfaces. They failed a day after initial use. They were warrantied and the replacements work fine.

Most of the other hard drives I’ve had fail are due to an impact of some sort. SSD eliminates that.

I see you realized that your Peavey speakers were part of their cheap budget range and have since upgraded.

Do you read product reviews?

Your failure with hdd's speaks volumes.
I can't think of a hdd failure I've had..I must of had one.
You sound like you specialise in broken hdd.
I've even accidentally dropped one and it still worked fine.

This is my thread and it's about hdd..those who want to promote the sales of ssd should start their own thread.

SSD = Faster and are more reliable

Ditch the mechanical drives and go with SSD’s

Please stay on topic.
A SELF PROCLAIMED POWER USER WITH AN OLD 2011 LAPTOP HAS NO BUSINESS HI JACKING MY THREAD.
Have you bought a new one yet?

Huey, suggested that way back in the thread. Ron just wants to do everything on the cheap then moan about it not working.

No point arguing with him.

Just stick with the hdd topic or start your own thread.

Thank you to the few who provided useful information which helps when configuring a hdd.

Wow....

You tout about using less expensive gear and then take a shot at me for entry level gear I had when I was getting started. Those speakers actually worked really well and I sold them in good working condition.

My experience with the broken hard drives is mostly based on laptops and externals that I have repaired or recovered data from for customers/friends of mine. My two recent failures were probably due to poor quality control during manufacturing. They were replacing an external that a guest accidently knocked off my kit.

I started off giving you a pointer for a WD utility because I thought you might have had that manufactures drive due to your post with a link to their site.

I didn't insult you or your kit. My advice and opinion in this public forum was on topic and relevant.

Enjoy your thread.

This is a warning Ron, if you want people to stick on topic don't insult them because they have had less luck then you with hard drive failures.
Hard drive failures are a thing, and indeed a lot more likely to happen with traditional hard drive with moving parts compared to solid state drives.

Also, you realize that you are insulting someone for having used cheaper gear, while at the same time not accepting the answer that there is more expensive gear (ssd's) available that would be another possible solution to your problem?

Here's some data to back that up from a data server that uses hard drives in the thousands:
https://www.backblaze.com/blog/hard-drive-stats-for-q1-2018/

So basically, every year you have a 1% chance that a hard drive fails. If you have 100, on average 1 will fail every year.

This thread is about configuring my hdd.

It has nothing to do with ssd.

Please stop trying to sell me unwanted expensive hardware.

I'm sure you all will be pleased to know my two internal 2TB sata HDD are now working great. So simply replacing the dvd drive with a £5 caddy and £60 2TB HDD has solved my storage problem.

Power cycling control

Shutting down and rebooting a computer or resuming it from hibernation cycles the power to the drives in the computer. The spin-up operation performed by a drive after a power cycle is believed to place more stress on the drive than running the drive continuously for a long period of time.

Based on professional experience of system administrators, it is believed that there is a direct relationship between the number of power cycles of a computer and the probability of failure of its drives**. In other words, a computer with a high uptime may have a lower probability of drive failure than one that has its power cycled routinely.

The above quote may be very important to those using both internal and external second hdd. The use of the methods mentioned in this thread may enhance hdd life. Like a car engine it could be the stopping and starting which does the most damage.
