Hi All, hope everyone had a good Christmas.
Well, i am venturing into the world of VirtualDJ, and so far not having much luck, can anyone offer help or advice?
I wanted to keep my costs down to start with, too see if i like using this kind of product before i spend a fortune on it, so after reading the min and rec spec, i brought a second hand laptop on e-bay with the following spec.
Pentium 4 2.4GHz
736MB Ram
Windows XP Pro
Radeon IGP 340M internal graphics
Creative Soundblaster 4.1 External Soundcard
Since recieving the laptop, i've also noticed that the graphics card only has 34mb (although there is nothing about graphic card memory on the virtual dj spec)
The problem i'm having is using videos. I've decoded my DVD's to .avi/divx files.
I can load the first file and it will decode and play just within an accpetable time frame, but loading a second sends the CPU meter crazy and brings it all to a stand still. The Second video would never decode in time to play after the first.
Is this problem due to only 34mb on the graphics card? I've noticed the program runs a lot faster and doesn't max out the CPU if i don't connect the laptop to my external screens.
I've adjusted all the settings on my PC to improve performance over quality and done the same within VDJ (to the best of my limited knowledge).
So, will upgrading the Laptops RAM to 1GB make any noticable difference to this problem?
What should i do?
Gary

with a 32 meg grapics card
i think video mixing is praticaly impossible you should upgrade
ram upgrades will always help to speed the system to boot up a little bit :)
but remember your computer runs at the slowest components speed

I'm not very 'aware' about laptops. Can i add more RAM to the graphics card or do you mean the PC? I take it Laptop graphics vards cannot be upgraded or changed?
This should really be put in the spec requirement on the site i think?

it is i belive :)
your laptop is fine for audio mixing
but for video
you may need to buy a new one if its a laptop or contact the person who sold it to you and ask what upgrades are available
computers can easlily be upgraded
your local pc shop can do this

Well i can't see it! lol
All i can see is:
The minimum requirement to run Virtual DJ is:
* PIII 850 MhZ computer
* 1024x768 SVGA video
* DirectX compatible soundcard
* 512 MB RAM
* 20 MB free on the hard-drive
The recommended configuration is:
* PIV 3 GhZ computer
* 1024x768 SVGA video
* 4.1 DirectX compatible soundcard (with front and rear separate outputs)
* 1024 MB RAM
* 200 MB free on the hard-drive
The laptop is second hand, so can't go back with it. Can laptop graphics cards really be upgraded? I'm about to open mine and break everything now lol

ok tis the audio specifcations only then
you can pay a shop to upgrade your card and gear if it is not intergraded into the board
however iv it is intergraded yiu will need to buy a new laptop
to get a better card
id strongly adivse you dont open it
as things could get nasty :(

Ok, well thanks for the advice, i'm pretty annoyed now lol
Do you (or anyone else) think it would just be a waste of time upping the RAM from 736 to 1024?

As a silly question, have you checked the bios to see if 32Mb is the highest you can set the graphics to? As laptops share RAM for video, this may have been turned down by the previous owner as they didn't need high end graphics.
If this is the case, the extra 256Mb RAM would be helpful to you.

that may improve the size however if it is intergrated a raise to 256
probaly wont improve proformance much
as they lack alot of multimedia features
give it a try

Are there any links for checking the BIOS?
Not quite sure where to start with that.
