I am unable to hear the cue song loud enough on my headphones when my loudspeakers are at performance level.

Thats dependent on your soundcard most of all. Does it have volume sliders or even gain ? look in soundcards control setting.
Also, make sure you run VDJ at "always zero" for auto gain setting

I am running a lexicon lambda soundcard. The only time I get a loud enough sound from the headphone is when I plug the headphone straight from my macbook soundcard.

exactly.
So you need to turn up the volume/gain on the other soundcard.
Look in the souncard control pannel, should be volume sliders there
