Is there a external video card (Usb) out there that would work with vdj out there.

No, the USB2 bus speed isn't fast enough to allow for an external graphic card solution of any decent quality. That's why there aren't really any out there. (Only very simple low powered ones)

Bus Speeds

USB2 = approx 60MB/s
AGP 8X = 2,100 MB/s
PCI Express 16x = 4000 [8000]* MB/s
PCI Express 32x = 8000 [16000]* MB/s

*PCI Express has bidirectional data flow, hence the doubled figure in brackets.

I remember looking into upgrading Notebook GPUs about a year or two ago..

Notebook Graphic cards are a completely different animal to desktop graphics cards.

You often find that a Radeon xxxx in one notebbok is different to the same Radeon in another notebook, it's all to do with how they are integrated into the mainboard.

However notebooks with the possibilty of installing a different graphics using a mini PCI-E slots are emerging (MXM slot)

Graphics Cards manufacturers are taking notice of the notebook market more & more, but we are quite someway off from the upgrade possibilities of desktops.
