..... uuuuuhhhhhhhhhhh this is one of those optimization kinda problems ....... i'm gonna try and start at a and end at z ..........your machine is not at all generic .....it is not a known quantity.....after you bring it home , what you add or subtract or update/ upgrade is unknowable , unless you spell it out for us ......
what is your flavor of vista ?? how many processes are running ?? have you done anything to optimize your machine to make it ready for pro audio ?? if so , what ?? are you using a pro sound card or the default system card ?? any controllers ?
next , what version of VDJ are you using ?
many people think of their computer as generic , when it is anything but , then wonder how come the software doesn't work right ...... actually that line of thought , is totally bass ackwards ....... the software is generic .....every copy of that version is the same , and it's attributes are quantifiable ...... so what you have to do is determine what is wrong with your computer , and change that , so that it is capable of being a professional music / video machine ........
in computerland , speed and ram are hyped quite a lot , but the most important thing is probably compatibility , making everything work together smoothly ...... if you have frozen , or crashed , your duo core with tons of ram isn't helping you any ........

since you mentioned automix and fade , i think you have 5.0 ..... the stutter could be a number of diffent things ..... anti virus scanning, wifi trying to find a network and the battery charging all come to mind ........
i should add that stutter and automix and 5.0 don't automatically go together
if you get a real fast real harsh stutter kinda randomly , that is the antivirus , if you get a slower skip more regularly , like nearly every song , that is the battery , and / or wifi .......
