I tried using video in V7 and hated it. Even earlier in V8 I found the whole thing was a bit ropey.
Lately I have had the opportunity to output video in one of my residencies, and for the others I got an 11" FHD monitor so I can view the videos when working.
I have tweaked a few settings here and there but have had absolutely no issues. The transitions work seamlessly and that's just using the laptop on-chip Intel HD card.
Kudos to Adion and the team, job well done.

Do you mind me asking about your laptop, what are the specs?
I'm probably shooting myself in the foot..but tomorrow I'm expecting an Asus K55a laptop with Intel dual core 2020m, 8gb ram, 1000gb hdd and Intel onboard hd4000 graphics. I'm sure it will work well, however I don't want to mess around too much if it can be avoided. Before I bought it I ensured that I could upgrade the CPU to a decent i7. It cost very, very little compared to an Asus Rog.
Interestingly all the venues are becoming equipped to deal with video, they have projectors and large screen TV's, admittedly there for football, but we can also use them.
I think video DJing is going to be the norm in the future.
If you can't do it..then you can't DJ.

Ron none of your machines even come close the specs of Keith's machine, lol!!
He too has a beast of a machine.
Your learn that us who take video seriously go all out on our machines. ;-p

I think you will find I'm going to help change what has been normal ln the past.
Video DJing is arriving for the masses.

You should try the new "Link video" engine. That part is awesome.

we've done video at the club even as far back as when it first opened in '98.
but in '98 we were using VHS tapes.
in '06 we switched to using computers and went with VDJ (3.4 back then - I still have the install disc) on a Dell XPS desktop (3ghz/ 8gb RAM/ 2gb video card) with winXP and were immediately doing things none of the other clubs around could do = video open to close, every single night we were open.
we skipped vdj 4, 5, 6, and rolled into v7 full speed with a new ASUS desktop and hit everyone with both barrels video-wise.
when vdj8 rolled out I was skeptical and held on to 7 as a die-hard holdover like a lot of us were.
then 8.2 dropped. and so did a lot of peoples jaws.
we are still doing things with video that even other clubs using 8.2 just can't or won't do
why?
money - the other clubs aren't spending it. one thing I put my foot down was that if we were going to spend money on something that was going to be our life's-blood then we needed to spend smart. it's an investment and you have to make sure it's going to give you the most bang for your buck.
this ASUS desktop has lasted almost 7 years now and the only thing left to upgrade is the RAM but it's not really necessary right now. sure we could put an 8gb video card in instead of the 4gb and yeah we could put in 32gb of RAM - but it's working. and while we DO need to upgrade in the near future we can use this one till it falls apart as a back up.
the moral of my rambling at 3am is - spend as much as you can to future-proof your investment on a computer. you don't know what's going to come out next that will need a more powerful machine so be prepared for it.

So I got my new, cheap, second hand Asus K55a laptop in the post this morning. From CPU benchmarks I knew the Intel 2020m CPU was an improvement on a my old 2.4ghz Intel core 2 duo. It uses the Intel HD4000 onboard graphics chip. How good will it be?
Well I'm still tidying it up but with two 1080p videos playing, one on each deck, Tellyvisuals, the INTERNET, and me messing around it was using @ 30% of its CPU! No problems at all with the graphics..but never the less I will do a little optimizing. This compared to my old X58L (which will soon be just a backup) of 80%. Ram is not really a problem since it will run on @ 4gb, and I've got 8gb.
Budget video DJing for the masses is here, and now!
Well done Atomix, and Intel, and Microsoft (mind you they need a lot of their junk throwing out, and updates was killing the CPU, but easily solved).
Oh, and I've thrown out all the Asus software junk.
As yet I have not done a fresh, clean install of Win8..but it does not seem to be needed.
Terrific..just well done everybody!

Ron, that's called perception. The capabilities have been here, you've just now accepted/discovered it.

Hm you're right to a certain extent..but it also has a lot to do with the venues. They are only just catching up, mostly due to football. We can use their large screen TV's and projectors. That helps a lot.
I believe you have been using a budget laptop (but it would have been quite expensive when you got it) for a good few years. You are one of the pioneers. I've read a few of your comments wondering why people were having problems. I got my laptop which is in excellent condition for a little over £100.
Perception?
What is budget?
LOL yes I'm only just catching up with you!

I don't know about a pioneer, I'm like you, curious and capable. Having access to gear and PCs makes for good times in the lab.
If only I could make a full-time gig of this kind of work.
But to be on subject; YES! VDJ 8.2 is an amazing video mixing tool. Works well with On-board Intel and dedicated video cards. I wish I had a big club I could run all these neat features at. Looks cool in my studio, though my wife is not nearly as impressed as I.

Ron I been VJin' for 5 years now. When the Toshiba died, I got a K55 that I used for 3 years, worked fine. But, with the 55, I did notice a considerable change in CPU usage when VDJ8 came along. I never optimized it. So optimized, I think it'll work fine. And BTW, I always thought VJing with VDJ7 worked great also.:)

You know of course that I've been a successful vdj with an antique Asus X58L for the last year. It did take a little ducking and diving lol.
Interestingly I did give away a half optimized Acer which was not a terrible spec, but was not as good as my antiques. There may be something about an Asus. I don't doubt it's accidental!
I'm starting to think that optimized means not allowing windows updates and all the junk software screw you up.

For those who are interested I've just downloaded a win8.1 iso from Microsoft, and burnt it to DVD. I'm getting a little tired of updating win8, and I don't like the look of the recovery partitions scattered all over the K55a. I'm getting ready to kick the lot out.

Ron said "I think video DJing is going to be the norm in the future." Wake up! It has been the norm for me since 05 when I got version 3.4. I have built a few custom desktops with ASUS motherboards, and have used an ASUS laptop since Dec 14. ASUS is not the only brand that will work, there are many others. I just use what works for me. As I've stated before, some of us do not just want to get by, we want to excel. I don't have time to wonder if my machine can do this or that. Scared to try something new on the fly. I want to do everything, well. Now and next month. Time is money, and all the time and effort you have spent on optimizing this, tweaking that, re-encoding videos, posting over and over and over and over about all of your exploits. How is this a budget machine? You could have gotten a great machine that would not be obsolete the second you got it. If you want to be a budget DJ, that's OK. Just be honest about the actual cost, including all of the time you are spending, on being a budget DJ. How many hours are you spending on making an old machine capable, just to be able to do the basic video stuff?
For those that may be looking for a ASUS ROG, Costco has "affordable" models here and here.
Do not be afraid to invest in the heart of your system, you will be ready for all of the new features and technology.

For those with a little technical ability 4g of ram and Intel HD4000 graphics are fine. I would suggest getting the best laptop you can, but you don't need a laptop gaming monster.
AMAHM is not a tech.
He is far from qualified to advise on what is good, his solution is to spend lots of money.
Why?

No you are old, I'm older. There is a difference. You still have not answered the question that I asked you. How many months have you been working on trying to find a budget machine?
geposted Fri 10 Feb 17 @ 1:09 am
A lot, I've been studying things like CPU benchmarks, and the Window resource monitor. This is knowledge put in the bank! The young don't need to mess around like me, they can just read what is written.
You almost seem like a high spec laptop salesman.
I'm 66 in the summer, you are not much older than me, if any.
I've spent my life learning about our world, what have you done..DJ'ed?
