To my fellows on the other side of the pond.
My 16 year old son asked me whats the difference between England, Brittan, Great Brittan, and the United kingdom?
I could not answer him.
Can you?

We once were a Great nation bagpuss, not any more though,
The title refers to when we had all our colonies throughout the world.

It all depends on how you interpret the word "great", historically it was significant yes although personally I don't have much pride in knowing we once ruled a large portion of the world.
It's amazing how the media machine has convinced us that we now have such a moral stance in the world.
What’s great about Britain today? Just a few years ago they said the economy and British values (still remain undefined) but today both look quite compromised in my view.
Perhaps I'm just being typically British, cynical and all :).

well i'm proud to be british, proud of our achievements, proud of our inventions (you wouldn't be reading this if not for one of them). not so proud of some of our history.... but most countries have an era they regret.

Im waiting for a big shake up I think we need a priminister like the one America has, he just banned the bonuses for the fat cats at the banks but has our priminister? no
Another thing the balance has been disturbed, so many people immigrants living off the state and foreign workers working in the labour market its not even funny, you cant joke about it! I remember growing up and been able to work for the railways and the forestry commission it was great but you couldn't get that sort of work now as a result you don't see the characters that you once did, so and so the forester and thingy bob the railway jack from down the road etc.
I live in the country and used to work as a farm contracter I regularly used to be driving about on tractors and the like but not anymore there all polish its really sad I remember the local lads growing up to be able to do this for a living I was always flashing my lights but not anymore its just the polish that drive them that's the only time you see them as they reside on the farms all the time living in caravans honestly its like war time when we had Germans prisoners working on our farms.

Good one Tayla. If you can't be proud of your Mother/Fatherland then i don't hold much hope for anyone giving respect to other Country's. Always proud of our true footie fans when they go overseas and hold-up the flag and do us proud in a non violent way, given that we once had a bad reputation.

What??
Sorry, but I must say that English Beer is terrible!
No offense intended but you just don't know what a good beer is until you have tasted a pure Aussie beer.
Something like Tooheys Old, James Boags or Carlton!
I know all your brits are thinking that Fosters is terrible. Yes it is. Hence why we export it to you :P
Even though Fosters is advertised as "The Australian Beer", no one drinks it over here.

it's not that bad mate... as long as you hold your nose, mix it with cider and lick a rats bum before taking a slurp, it's fine.

There are good and bad things you can associate with any country, as there are good and bad people.
If you want to talk about science or the arts for example then we have a strong place in the world.
When I talk about national pride; I refer to the nation as one unit and how we are represented on a global level.
So I’m troubled by my government, a recession where we are left so venerable and rising violent crime (among the highlights).
That’s not to say I don’t like British music and elements of British culture, I do.
