I agree with Renee. You gotta have instant back up. No matter what.

Don't worry,
I have everything backed up on 2 drives already. I'm not that stupid, some may tell you different, lol
The backup service will be extra security.

4 drives only taken out of safe (or house) to plug in once a month or as needed. question - will keeping them unplugged except for when they are being used extend life?

Well the worst happened...I lost everything, ..
Hopefully some good will come of this, if only a few people go and backup their stuff that good Karma should come back to you..
Myself I am incredibly anal.
I have 2 terabyte externals (1 primary, 1 backup), and my rackmount has a 2 terabyte hardrives in raid 1 config (continuous backup )
Plus I backup to my desktop computer, and my laptop has all my "must play" songs (only 80 gig HD but I can easily do a non-video dance with it..)

I feel your pain. I had my HD crash and burn just a few months ago. It died right BEFORE I backed it up.
I was at a club hooking up my gear and my laptop could not see the drive. I was like WTF#%$@.
The drive was spinning but making a semi loud "CLICK" sound. DAMN...Heads crashing into each other.
It was a wrap at that point. I called a friend to do my show for me cause I had no music.
(It's REAL HARD to DJ from someone else HD)
I was kinda lucky though, just a week or two before the drive died, I had given a friend of mine most of the music I had on the drive so I was able to retrieve the vast majority of my music.
Good luck to you.
One thing you can try is to freeze the drive. If you have a freezer bag, the kind you can vacuum seal, put the HD in the freezer for a couple of days. This sometimes makes the platters contract just enough to get your stuff off the drive.
Hope this helps.
