I am going to talk with this teacher, but before I do anything, I want to hear it from him first. If he just straight-out asks me for music I will take it up with his boss.
I just need to make sure it wasn't my daughter who did the offering, you know how kids can be, "oh my Dad has everything, do you want me to see if he can fill up your USB thingy?" lol

I am a teacher who DJs ALL THE TIME at the school that I work at. I get it ALL the time from the kids to the teachers to the parents. Even had one parent tell me I wasn't about s__t because I wouldn't burn her a CD. There is another guy who worked here last year that DJed as well. We would trade mp3s every so often if I ran across something he didn't have or vice versa. But like you all, it has taken me YEARS to get the music I have, and I STILL don't have nearly as much as I would like. So you think I'm gonna just burn you CDs or load your IPOD just because? Get real...

I put together some Halloween music for my young sons school and the principal and 2 other teachers took the disc home and copied it! Then they asked me for more.

I dont let any USB sticks on my PC, i tell them it could crash the PC and would spoil the show/set/night...
as there are viruses that spred over USB sticks, i tell them NO.

Yeah thats the line I also use, which is true. I dont even like occasionally connecting my gig pc to the internet for updates, let alone letting someone stick their dodgy memory stick in there. Also works for people wanting to play songs from memory stick.
For people asking at gigs, maybe have a few mix promo cds you've made yourself and give them one of those to help promote - you already know they're a sharer ;)
Bit trickier when its the daughter's teacher - dont envy you on that one (or on flicking off all those beautiful rekkids for next to nothing). This was never a problem with vinyl, but it was boring watching the black plastic going around compared to the music vids on the video screen ;)

it was more of a hassle in the vinyl days, people expected you to make them a mixtape, and for very cheep, if not for free!!

I actually have a clause in my contract that states that I will not and cannot insert any USB device into my system besides my own. I list the reason as possible viruses, malware and spyware can hitchhike on the device and contaminate my pristine system.
The reason I have that in my contract wasn't to thwart attempts by people to get free music but because so many people bring me a thumb drive and ask me to play a song on it, so I needed to put that on my contract. I will not risk it.
Now I use that same rule as my answer to people asking me for music to put on USB devices. I don't have time to burn CDs is what I will tell them if they shove a blank CD in my face. I have had guys say "I can do it quick if you'll let me". Then I just tell them to piss off because I paid for the music and they should too.
I try the nice way first and the RuDe way as a last resort!

Another thing on a different note slightly, i was at a venue once setting up and the venue manager was showing some potential customers/bride and groom around when I heard a him say we can't really afford a pro Dj but we can hire a PA for £250 and plug our ipod into it! we'll probable do that. I'd of done it for £280, very strange some peoples perceptions.
I've heard this before... I went straight over, politely interupted, gave my card and asked them to come spak to me after they had finished their tour.
I then had a good 15min chat while I was still setting up about what they wanted, first dance etc. I got their booking, but not at that venue ;-)
Cheers,

Hey Rude
I think your post should have a name change to “downright ignorant people”. Only those who are ignorant of the value attached to what we have paid for, ignorant in terms of purchasing music or other media and ignorant to the value of our time will make such ignorant requests.
Just trying out the word ignorant to see how many times I could use it.LOL

I had a kid walk up and hand me a FLOPPY DISK and ask if I would put all my videos on it.
I called his teacher and told him to give the little bastard an F in his computer science class.

Yeah I did that also but it does not stop them from asking!! The only way we do it out here is to have a friend with ya @ gigs to intercept people that try to come up to the booth and ask them what they want? so I never have to talk with them when I am playing music. I even had a few friends who were cops ask me for music but when I told them NO they got pissed and thank god they have not hasseled me!!

If i dont want to give anyone music, ill just tell that person No.. I wont tell that person's boss etc.. That person could get introuble or fired for something he or she thought was ok even though we know its illegal for sharing. Many people will ask the dj for music and it will always continue to happen.

In this case Caliente the person Rude is talking about is influencing the minds of children. That is something that needs to be taken very seriously. I have two children, one in high school, it is scary to think what they could be learning from teachers that I do not agree with. It is things like this that cause parents to resort to home schooling.

Let some of these idiots transfer over 20yrs worth of vinyl to mp3, the time and the money I have spent. That was done for the love of music and not just to fill an Ipod for Tom, Dick or Mr. Ballsy!

Had a guy who thinks he's a DJ rang me and asked me if I could put some tunes on his laptop. I said I didn't have time, but, was he transferring from his old laptop or from his CDs. His response was, "NO, I want YOU to put YOUR tunes on it!". My response was two words and put the phone down :-)
Apparently he asked every DJ in my hometown and got the same response. Idiot!
After 32+ years of DJing and enough vinyl to open a record shop (still got it all !!!), I was buying vinyl BEFORE 12" singles started appearing!!! AFAIK the first 12" single I bought was the Undisputed Truth - You+Me=Love (Promo 12") in 1976........ and yep, I still got it :-)
I first built my mp3 database in 1998. It was around 25 gigs then, it is now approx. 160 gigs. The structure is still what I originally designed with a few tweaks here and there. I have recorded loads of my original vinyl, still haven't finished. Lots of the tracks are NOT available on download sites. Not giving a copy to anyone!!! I only buy Promo Only Videos now, don't even buy CDs or records.
I often get asked for a mix CD (usually the doorstaff), my reponse has always been I don't have the time to make one, however, I will sometimes give them my mixed backup CD (mixed on VDJs smart autoplay, it's great for this). Its usually when it's a couple of months out of date and I really need to make a new one with current tunes.
When I get asked "Can you put some of these tunes on a CD?" I usually say "Sorry, I only use the video, can't do it" and leave it at that. :-)
