Dear All,

Hope you are all well,

I have a problem. When I am Djing at a club plugging my Hurcules RMX in through my laptop to a like all in one cd/mixer I run it through the aux on one of the channels I get a really bad buzzing over the speakers. Some one said getting a ground loup isolater will get rid of this is this correct?

Love

Yes thats correct if the sound is buzzing in low frequenz the ground loop isolator will help.

This can happen when connecting 2 power items together with audio, and yeah, A Ground Loop will stop this happening

If you want to MacGyver it, you can just roll some duct tape around your laptops power plug and cover the grounding pins ;)

Hi all

Sorry AuralCandy.

Covering/disconnecting the ground pin on any equipment is dangerous and not the answer.

On a Laptop power supply if you do this it renders the power supplies surge suppression inactive (For reasons I don't need to go into) and can make the supply far more likely to be damaged by mains transients. Most laptop supplies are switched mode and have a high leakage current when not earthed. This can result in dangerous voltages being present on the power jack.

Please be proffesional in the way you operate your equipment and bear in mind that the voltages involved in any mains powered system have the potential to kill you, and others.

I'd like to think that the words "MacGyver it" and a winking smiley would been good enough indication of how seriously my "advice" was ment to be taken.

Apparently not.

I've been doing that for years ..... great to slip a couple of slices of bacon on the PSU at the end of the gig for a quick snack :)

lol, and sunny side up please :)

The ground loop issue has been discussed on these forums for years. The one re-occurring thread throughout all of them has been "cut the ground pin off" or the "put tape on the earth pins". Some have said it tongue in cheek. Others have said it in earnest. Without being able to see the responders face we have no way of knowing if they are serious or not, winks not withstanding.

Go buy one of these. Some of these or, one of these. If money is an issue go buy one of these. I highly recommend any of the first three. The last one will work but, play it safe, please.

As to the argument about it being a joke, the cutting off of a ground/earth plug. It is no joke! Electricity is nothing to play with, or joke about. Some of us here have seen people die from electrocution and do not even remotely of find these issues funny. All it takes is one volt to cross your chest at the wrong time, while your heart valves are in flux, and your dead. No next job, no giving the kids a hug when you get home. No bitching on these forums about how drunks are idiots. So, for the sake, and safety, of others, please do not even attempt at being cute about it. That is one thing I will not tolerate......

Here in the UK, most places require you to be PAT tested, in other words, your equipment has to be checked out to make sure it is safe, which is a good thing. I have a ground loop isolator, it is the best way to go :)

At your next gig, before the sound check, or at home with your gear, try unplugging your laptop and running it on battery, if the buzzing is better, then you need to get yourself a ground loop isolator, they are relatively inexpensive and worth it in the long run. Better than a fire and never getting a gig in your area again.

Point taken Terry ..... apologies

I've never ever had buzzing of any sort on any of my gear. Reading previous posts about this I guessed it was a problem specific to the USA but maybe not?

Hi Kradcliffe

Ground loops can be a problem with any equipment. In the UK we have the safest domestic electrical power system in the world (As long as it is used correctly). But in other countrys the story can be quite different with all kinds of different socket and wiring setups. Many manufacturers go to great lengths to avoid ground loop issues. In most cases carefull routing of mains power cables can make a big difference. If you have earthed equipment bolted into a 19" rack you can also avoid ground loops being formed by carefull insulating of the individual equipment. You can get simple to fit nylon/plastic insulators which fit over the equipment rack mounting ears and insulate the bolts.

If you are using a multi way socket try plugging your equipment in order. from the power amp to the source equipment.

Ground loop isolators are a great and safe way to avoid humm problems.

Hey is there a way to prevent the buzzing from happening in the first place?

Is it in the soundcard? Will a high quality soundcard prevent this from happening?

Thanks!!
