In system properties under virtual memory setting the system won't let me allocate more then Initial MB 4096 and Maximum MB 4096, when the Recommended amount is 4605 MB., when I press the set button a message pops up telling me that 4096 is the max.
I have 99 Gigs available on Drv C:\ Why is this happening and what can I do to change it.
Appreciate some help with this.
Thank you

How much physical memory do you have in your system right now?

Windows will normally only allow you to have a swapfile twice the size of your physical RAM, so I'm guessing your computer has 2gb?

4096Mb is the limit for a 32-bit system.

You have a 32-bit operating system. It can't address more than 4Gb of memory. You need 64-bit for that.
Also, out of that 4Gb memory, some of it is reserved for the Operating System, so you will end up with around 3Gb on a 4Gb system.
NOTE: You don't need a swap file bigger than 4Gb - Windows is only recommending it because it uses a simple rule of 1.5 times the physical system memory. It will recommend it even if it's impossible to set.

Ok, thank you for that knowledgeable answer I was told by someone that they are able to go higher then 4096., I then ask them what OS and they replied with Xpro ???
Does that answer smellll like fish to you???
Should I let Windows manage the Virtual memory?
Thanks

It's a load of rubbish - PAE on some Enterprise/advanced server products does allow more than 4Gb usage on a 32-bit system, but not on an end-user O/S such as XP. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physical_Address_Extension
For more than 4Gb, you need 64-bit.
You don't normally need to change the virtual memory, and with 4Gb it's rarely needed anyway. Just let Windows manage it.

Actually on a >2GB XP system virtual memory is kinda redundant. I have had it switched off for years without any issues..
Right now I run a 4GB 64 windows 7 system without Virtual memory and also no issues..

My gig machine is Win 7 professional with 2gb and I have it disabled too. I don't mix video, just audio and I find the machine actually goes quicker with no swapfile.
