In Order to use the headphone previewing mode with Virtual DJ, your soundcard need to be multi-channel ( referred as 4.1 or 5.1 for standard computer soundcards) and have the appropriate connections (often identified as FRONT , REAR, and Center/sub)
a) Check that your sound card’s speaker mode is set to 4-channel or 5.1-channel, using the sound card's own control panel ( ** Recommended) or at worst through Windows SOUND AND AUDIO PROPERTIES ( Volume tab > Speakers settings)
b) Connect your headphones to the rear speakers connector on your sound card (black connector on most sound cards).
c) When you run VirtualDJ,
- Input : None
- Output(s): Headphone > Master Chan3/4 / headphone Chan1/2
-Soundcard: 4.1 card > You soundcard card name
** Some integrated sound cards use a system allowing the usage of card's connectors for various fonctionalities, which may require some configuration by the user. Please consult the card's documentation for more details about theses possibilities
All this being said, I would recommend a soundcard that is made for DJ applications (that has 4 channel ouputs), such as these examples:
