Thats cool. I understand..
I went thru that period myself.. (but it wasnt the customers I was worried about, it was my fellow DJ's that I found love to lurk and take info and attempt to lie to their customers..)

overtime I realized it doesnt matter.. All's that matters is the people at your last show, and what THEY think of you..

let me put it this way.. Marcel & I are both in the exact same market. the EXACT same market..
Yet I know my pricing and service level doesnt affect his.. Why? because the majority of clients don't care, and cant be bothered to check.
and the ones that do? that go around calling EVERY SINGLE DJ for prices... those customers are probably not going to hire Marcel OR me, as we are not charging the lowest price in town..
over 75% of my clients come from past clients. again, its THOSE people I need to make sure they see my value.. NOT the yellow page shoppers..

just my opinion :-)

Original Question: Quote "How much do you make in your respected country? As a dj or a VJ"

Any answer provided to this question would NOT be very helpful unless it were being asked by a person who was planning on working in the same general location (Venue) Florida is larger geographically speaking than many countries, we span two time zones. A DJ working in Miami's South Beach is going to charge more (and get it) than A DJ working in Apalachicola where the main industry is FISHING.

A DJ working in Apalachicola is probably going to make more than a DJ working in Wyoming because there are only 12 people who live there. I charge more in January, February & March because this is our biggest tourist season months (It's 80 degrees here right now) There are so many variables if I were inclined to say what I charge (And I'm not) it would not mean a thing to the OP.

Way back in the late 70's we charged Pubs $100 Per night, but then most of our gigs we arranged ourselves hiring halls employing staff ($10), advertising, we did a lot of travelling on a regular circuit of local towns, the most we made was $800 good money then ... but we in the end only broke even but had a great time!
We moved more to Pub/wedding/birthday/ corporate gigs as garrenteed money without the overheads.
As times gone on rising costs have far exceeded, the amount we could rise prices, narrowing our margins.
In the old days we faced fly by nighters.... with a 3 in 1 stereo and a string of coloured light bulbs, today its mp3 players full off pirated music and "disco party lighting / speakers, amps mixers" all so cheap to buy, often around same price as to hire us!
There Only lacking one thing ............ Experience, Professionalism.

Also funkmasterfrank, stacking em high and selling em cheap has simply f*cked the industry as a whole. No Excuses! I did the same too for a bit years ago when i first started however I saw what it was doing and now employ fewer and concentrate more on quality earning the same as before but with a better rep and better clients.

You're too funny...

Who said I was selling them cheap?? I didn't know what price he was selling his services at and I didn't care. He could have been trying to get me to higher my rates so he could get more jobs by using my price to sell himself.

I never metioned my price so how can you conclude that I was selling cheap?? This has been my fulltime work since the age of 18 and I'm 48 still doing the same fulltime job. You think I was able to have the best equipment, etc by giving my services cheap. WRONG buddy...

I don't charge by the hour. I charge per show, and the price changes depending on what they want..

Video+lights+mileage+more then 300 people+ etc etc etc can go as high as $1600.00, but on average I would guestimate $800 to $900?..

And you work 5 nights a wekk, wow!

here in Maine most clubs won't get 100 ppl at a time (can't fit em in anyway if they could), i use all their equipment including their lights, and I'm the highest paid in town for 160 - 200 a night...during the week , inc. a sunday night. I can walk to all my gigs and get their in 5 minutes, And am home in bed by 1:15am, so you're only talking 3-1/2 hours too. That's really not bad when you can still get an apartment up here for less than $400 a month, a beer for less than $2, AND A HOUSE FOR WAY LESS THAN $100,000.

Being a tax paying company aint so bad ;-)

@tayla: hang out at start.mobilebeat.com for bit..
pricing etc by mobile DJ's is discusses all the time LOL
though I can see a bar DJ not want to discuss his wage..

P.S.
I should have mentioned in my post..

MOBILE DJ, PART TIME.

Why not discuss, as all we are to each other are "words on a screen" with corny nicknames. It's simply a nice place to gather harmless info..it's not like we're ever gonna meet and play in the same area...sheesh. lighten up folks.

I know DJ's that charge the earth and get 1 maybe 2 gig's a month. I don't charge a lot, I don't need too and I'm working every Friday and Saturday night. Work that one out!!!! ;)

To me DJ'ing is not about making money like some users on here and other forums. There is more to life than money, and some people forget that

DJ'ing is about entertaining the crowd and giving them what they want, isn't it!!!

Put it this way i can earn double now im using cdj's instead of virtual dj.

Shows what clubs and bars think of virtual dj.

That's because some club and Bar owners still feel that ANY DJ software is inferior to CDJ's and that CDJ's or TT's are more reliable.

The question he asked was "how much, as he and we are all curious?

Tayla....do you feel like you are in "quoting hell"... ? LMAO

Well it's 3:00 Am and I just got home. I just worked (5) nights in a row for $15 Dollars a night and all the beer I could drink. So I have a serious buzz and $75 dollars to spend any way I see fit. (1 pair of shoes)
Good night. :-)

(PS: If you live in the U.S. set your clock ahead one hour. (Daylight savings time just kicked in)

The use of...

I think one of the big reasons most people do not tell is that pricing is much different from customer to customer. Depends on venue, driving distance, hours worked, etc. I won't even take out some of my better speakers unless the price hits a certain point. Same thing with lights.

There's just too many variables, starting with the area you live in, and to whether or not you are a club/mobile DJ.

right now i go for 200 bucks for 1.5 hrs at the club

thanks for the info I never took into consideration since my country is small, but in my country as i said the owners of clubs etc cheap no ass. when its time to pay some of them hiding to pay you your money

I usaully get fries with my shakes...sometimes i can even hold out for a mountain dew if the owner is real generous!

A kilo and a bag of a hundred lol
I don't think there is anything wrong with discussing pay but i know I wouldn't want to disclose anything personally.
I think in the UK its around £150 per night ($270) for a Dj in a pub bar e.t.c
Club Dj's get more around £250 - £400 depending on the size of the club.
Guest Dj's can be paid a lot more if they are household names, I remember Jeremy Healy getting paid £8000 for a gig in Ibiza once and he played for about 2 hours.
Thats all changed now and not many get paid that much unless they have real popstar status ( I guess Jeremy Healy did sing 'Shiny Shiny' )
