hey every one

i got an ns7 a few months ago and i havent really used it with vdj and have been using itch mainly bc of the scratching.

now with the new update, it does work just as good.

just a few questions though.

1) when using the gain on the ns7, can i make it so that the internal gain in vdj dosent change? basically i want it to act like it was an external mixer.

2) can some one tell me what the proper way to cue and hear songs in my headphones are? I find it confusing. If the master/CH 1-CH 2 switch is on master, mixer cross fader on chanel 2, and the head phone fader is all the way on the right (CH2) i hear whats playing in the master only. If i center the head phone fader, it plays both sides, despite the mixer cross being still on chanel 2. If i move the headphone fader to CH 1, i hear CH 1. If i center the head phones fader and mixer fader to the middle i hear both, but CH 1 is lower than what it really is. It might sound confusing, but it is.

3) in itch when the 2 beats are locked, the led bar goes to white. in VDJ this only changes from right to left, left to right when i move the head phone fader in those directions and when the switch for the headphones is on ch1-ch2. if i have it on master these lights dont do anything. Is that what they are intended for?

Any guidace is appreciated. scratching is sooo much better.

no one has comments about this?

The only item I can help you with is #2. The cue fader is working the way it does on any mixer with a master/cue button. When you press master you are meant to hear just that, the master output, that way you can blend the other channel, so what you're hearing in your headphones is what the crowd is hearing from the speakers; so if you have your main crossfader all the way to the right (channel 2) then that's what you'll hear in the headphones whether the cue fader is left or right, but if you put the cue fader all the way to the left you'll hear nothing, but as you slowly move it to the right you'll hear the left channel (channel 2) mixing in. The purpose of this "master" mode is so you can hear the mix exactly the same way the crowd is hearing it. It comes in handy if you don't have a monitor speaker and the acoustics of the DJ booth or whatever is poor, you can still at least have a way to monitor your mix. The only time I really use it is in the aforementioned scenario and I want to bust out a scratch and be able to hear the effect of the crossfader. If you want to hear each channel individually you need to switch to the other mode.

Let me see if I can expand a little on what dizzyrocks2001 has mentioned.

First we need to start out with #3 (the LED indicator).
In ITCH the LED indicator shows you when your beats are "matched", however, in VDJ the LED indicator indicates which deck is "active". Meaning if you have two songs playing (One left & One Right) which ever deck platter you touch, you will see the LED move to that side (assuming you have two songs playing). VDJ has identified that you want this to be the "active" deck.

You will also notice the same behavior on the waveform when you touch the platters (BLUE=DECKA/RED=DECKB )

Note: This is a very inefficient use of the LED indicators in my opinion, but that's irrelevant. If you don't like this behavior, you can change it by modifying the LED_HORIZONTAL_METER parameters under CONFIG>Mappers

Now...understanding the LED indicator let's move to #2.
When Headphone mode is on Master, a couple of things change.

  • When the Headphone Fader is on CH1, you hear whichever deck is "active" (watch the LEDs).
  • When the Headphone Fader is on CH2, you will hear exactly what the audience is hearing --- MASTER OUT. (Ignoring the "active" deck & LEDs, and relying only on the position of the Master crossfader)
  • Fading between the CH1 & CH2 gives you a mix of both of these modes.

Hope that helps!
