Topic: Rack Mountable controller

Dieses Thema ist veraltet und kann veraltete oder falsche Informationen enthalten.

Hello,

I am using Virtual DJ 6.08 (recently purchased) and I use this for music and videos that I have on my laptop.

I am looking for a rackable controller to use with Virtual DJ. I understand that Numark no longer makes the DMC2 which was made to interface with Virtual DJ.

Any suggestions on what to buy that will work well with videos also..... Hopefully under $500!!

Thanks,

Dale

What about the Denon HC-4500 - has integrated Soundcard and seems to be a very solid unit.

Greets, Heiko

tha American Audio DP2 is also an excellent choice (personal experience).

I see that there is a skin for the Denon unit.... Is there one for the American Audio DP2?

Also you do play videos too?

Thanks,

Dale

I bet you could find a DMC2 cheap on ebay if you looked hard, but to be fair I think the denon is almost certainly a better buy and will last a bit longer if money isn't too much of an issue.

I just really wanted to mention skins, whatever controller you get, there's really very little point to downloading a skin to match a controller that you actually have attached to your computer. Why do you need all those buttons on screen? They're in front of you in real life! The more buttons you've got on your controller, then less you need in the skin (freeing up space for a larger browser and video preview windows for example). Anyway, it's all personal preference I guess, just my 2 cents worth. (Also the way that the new serato itch was developed- very few controls on screen because they're all on your controller!)

Dont decide for a controller using a skin as a creteria. There will be a DP2 skin soon i quess. I might make one myself too.

Denon HC-4500 is excellent with VDJ. It's fully mappable and I've had my one for 2 years with no problems.

It's solid as a rock!

If you mix video then you can link the Denon DN-HC4500 to either a Denon X500 or X900 mixer and use the real mixer crossfader to crossfade videos.

+1 for the Denon HC-4500

Thanks for all your advice... greatly appreciated for a new user!!

+1 for Denon HC4500 controller.

Things I like about the Denon HC4500, quality parts and feel. Every button feels good to the touch and the jog wheels respond a lot better than the DP2 jogs. I like how you have the option of making the HC4500 media player a full blown CD Player if you buy the optional BU4500. Also another selling point is that the HC4500 is a serato approve controller, some of us also use Serato and it's nice to be able to have native controls over that software with this unit.
Things I dont like about the Denon HC4500, no built in mixer crossfader or EQ controls like the DP2 has. You have to pair it with a Denon DN-X500 or DN-X900 to get crossfader control in Virtual DJ and that will cost you at least another $450 (cheaper on ebay) to buy the Denon Mixer.

I had an American Audio DP2 but I returned it. The feel of the unit was okay when compared to its $300 price tag, I mean it doesn't feel as high end as the Denon unit but for the price it isn't bad.

Things I liked about the American Audio DP2 unit. The Price was good and the the unit has a built in mixer crossfader EQ controls (Something the denon unit does not have)

Now for the issues.
First and biggest issue was the built in sound card on the DP2 had issues with Virtual DJ on a Laptop running Windows 7 64 bit, all midi controls worked but I couldn't get any sound out of the unit when using it on Virtual DJ, there's actually a thread about this problem here http://www.virtualdj.com/forums/117004/Hardware_Technical_Support/The_American_Audio_DP2_.html?search=DP2&page=4
The sound issue was only isolated to VDJ with Windows 7 since it did work if you ran it with the bundled DEX software (but I don't like that software) and VDJ users on window XP were reporting good results.
My 2nd issue was a minor one but it did annoy me since these knobs are very important, they made the knobs for your headphone master cue so small and a bit hard to turn (if you find a picture of the unit you can see them 3 little black knobs to the top right from the mixers EQ knobs. You can compare the EQ knobs with the headphone cue knobs and you can see how much smaller they are.), they actually hurt my fingers after a while of using them.

Another good option would be a Hercules RMX with the optional rack ears. Its a sold unit with a lot of features. Does not feel as good as the Denon unit but it is a lot cheaper. When I say it does not feel as good as the Denon I mean the buttons. The RMX has hard plastic buttons and the Denon unit has these highly reponsive rubber buttons, kind of like rubber drum machine pads. Also the jogs on the RMX cannot compare to the jogs on the HC4500.

I am giving you this reveiw based on my own personal experience of owning these products.

I currently own three different setups.
Hercules RMX (for messing while on the road or in my house, also good for gigs but that's not what I bought it for)
Denon HC4500 media controller with Denon DN-X500 Mixer for my mobile gigs
2 Denon DN-HS5500 with a Denon DN-X1600 Mixer for my studio.

Between the American Audio, DMC2 and the Denon HC4500.. The HC4500 is the best choice.

Hello wblair,

It depends of how much space you have in your rack, but if you have 7U or more, you may also use a Hercules DJ Console Rmx or DJ Control Steel with Hercules DJ Console Rmx rack mounting kit.

Actually there's a website that still has stock of the DMC2 for sale in new condition not used that's where i might order mine

So if I Get the Denon HC-4500, I can use the controller to controll Virtual DJ no matter what skin I use?

I assume that I can still use the mouse to control the buttons on the skins also if I wish to do so?

I currently use the Numark I/O External USB sound device to connect my laptop to my mixer. With the Denon HC-4500, I assume that I would not need to use it anymore?

Thanks,

Dale

No no no, forget the damn skins! The skins have absolutely nothing to do with hardware control functions. The skins are just a way to personalize how your Virtual DJ looks like, you don't have to have a Denon-looking skin to be able to use Denon-controller.

IMHO these skins that modelled after hardware are a dumb idea to begin with.

The HC4500 has its own built-in sound card with an output for each deck, so you will not need to use the DJIO.

You can use any skin of your choice - It has no effect on the controller and vice-versa.
